Vatan offers several different points of interest for a culture-focused trip: sacred architectural history, a circus museum, a historic market hall and a walking tour devoted to the town’s heritage. The church and market hall showcase sacred architectural history, the Musée du Cirque tells the story of the circus, and the historic walking tour explores Vatan’s heritage.

Saint Laurian Church: Apse, Door and Window

Saint Laurian Church is one of the oldest historic monuments in Berry. Its oldest part is the three-sided apse, built under Francis I. The carved entrance door dates from the late 15th century; a stained-glass window beside the choir recalls the life of Saint Laurian. The three-sided apse defines the building’s form, while the carved door showcases craftsmanship; the stained-glass window beside the choir recalls the life of Saint Laurian. Visitors interested in architecture and religious art will find both at the church.

Circus and Engineering History

Since 1993, the Musée du Cirque has been France’s first circus museum and covers an area of more than 600 m². In the area around Vatan, the Musée des Ponts et Chaussées is also a cultural destination. It is housed in a model establishment built by Ferdinand de Lesseps and displays tools, equipment, instruments and vehicles related to the Ponts et Chaussées. This brings together different subjects: circus history on the one hand and technical collections on the other. Check the current visitor arrangements for the Musée des Ponts et Chaussées before your trip.

Halle au blé and Walking Tour

The Halle au blé was remodeled in 1749. Three of the original five trusses remain visible. You can visit the market hall independently at any time; guided tours are available on request. If a guided tour is important to you, request one. Also check the current visiting arrangements before your trip.

The Champs d’Amour Tourist Office has created a historic walking tour to discover Vatan’s heritage. It takes about an hour and is easy to walk. For a different way to get moving, the Boucles des Champs d’Amour cycling route passes through Vatan.

Market and Tourist Office Services

The Champs d’Amour Tourist Office in Vatan has an area featuring selected regional products, souvenirs and books. The selection and display may change. The office also issues fishing permits valid for one day, one week or a full year. If you plan to get a permit, confirm that it is available before your trip. A market is held on Wednesday mornings at Place de la République; check the date in advance.
