Valençay can be explored through very different experiences: the history of the château, a collection of roadworthy automobiles and hiking trails through Boischaut Nord. This combination makes it easy to choose the focus of your stay: historical heritage, a technical collection or time outdoors. You can start with whatever you want to shape your itinerary, rather than treating the places as one fixed sightseeing route.

Château history and memorial sites

Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord acquired the Valençay estate in 1803. From 1808 to 1814, the château served as a residence for the Spanish princes whom Napoleon had sent into exile. The dates mark distinct chapters: first Talleyrand’s acquisition, then the château’s use as a residence for the princes. Valençay’s history is thus reflected not just in one person, but also in the changing role of the estate.

Another clearly dated chapter can be found at Valençay’s priory church. In 1813, its former choir, which is now the apse, was restored at the expense of the Spanish princes. The restoration therefore took place during the period when the château served as the princes’ residence. The architectural term is also easy to understand here: the former choir is now the church’s apse.

The Mémorial de la section F du S.O.E. commemorates the sacrifice of 126 missing British, Mauritian, Belgian, Polish and French agents. At Talleyrand’s tomb, visitors can pay their respects and learn about his life and work; the tomb is open to visitors free of charge. These two memorial sites have different focuses: the memorial commemorates the fate of the agents, while the tomb is dedicated directly to Talleyrand.

Automotive history in the permanent exhibition

The Musée de l’Automobile à Valençay showcases more than 60 roadworthy vehicles dating from 1898 to the present day. The collection thus combines a broad span of time with a specific feature: the vehicles are roadworthy. Visitors interested in technology and automotive history will find a dedicated theme among Valençay’s attractions.

The permanent exhibition also includes fire engines, motorcycles, bicycles, enamel signs and historic posters. It therefore goes beyond automobiles in the narrow sense to include other vehicles and visual collection pieces. This also makes the visit appealing to travellers who do not want to limit their interest to just one type of vehicle. The museum thus stands alongside the historic sites as a cultural attraction in its own right.

Hiking routes and landscapes

For hiking, the GR® de Pays de Valençay offers a different scale from the sights in town: the route is 230 kilometres long and passes through Boischaut Nord. It is offered as a route with six hiking circuits; connections along the GR® de Pays also make it possible to take two- or three-day hiking circuits. The two details help with different planning questions: the number of circuits describes the options available, while the connections allow for multi-day loops. This helps you decide whether hiking will be a single focus or take up more of your stay.

The 40 hectares of meadows at the foot of the Château de Valençay offer a specific landscape detail. They stretch along the Nahon and its millrace. Here, the emphasis is on the area and its location, while the hiking route covers a wider regional scale. The two experiences are therefore more than just different versions of the same activity: the meadows describe a particular landscape around the château, while the GR® de Pays is an extensive hiking route through Boischaut Nord.

This makes it easy to distinguish between different travel interests: the château’s history, the church and the memorial sites offer cultural highlights, while the automobile museum adds a collection with its own breadth in terms of time period and subject matter. The hiking trails and meadows bring in the landscape. Depending on which of these aspects interests you most, you can tailor your stay in Valençay accordingly.
