The Creuse runs through Rivarennes, and the village centre lies on its left bank. This gives you two different ways to discover the area: paths along the river and walks with stated distances and times over varied terrain. Buildings from different periods also shape the range of things to see during your stay. When looking for accommodation, consider whether you want nature, outdoor activities or cultural history to be the focus of your visit.

Riverside paths and places by the water

The Voie verte follows the Creuse along a former railway line that has been converted into a route for cyclists and walkers. If you choose this route, you’ll find a path that explicitly caters to both forms of travel. There are numerous picnic tables and benches along the Voie verte; check their condition on site.

At the Plan d'eau des Champbons, there is a CRAPA fitness trail, as well as tables and benches. Before visiting, check the condition of the facilities and whether there are any seasonal restrictions. For a different view of the Creuse, visit the Prairie des Sécherins: it has wooden furniture, river views and a nearby car park. Here too, it’s worth checking the condition of the facilities.

Two hikes with comparable details

The two blue-marked hiking trails offer a clear choice by distance and duration. “Du sable au roc n°51” is 6.5 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. “Tapis de fleurs par monts et par vaux n°10” is 7.5 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of about 2 hours. The second route is therefore around one kilometre longer, while the estimated times differ by approximately 20 minutes. These durations are estimates; trail conditions can vary by season, so check them before setting out.

The route “Du sable au roc” is also described in terms of its changing terrain: it first follows sandy ground along the Creuse. It then climbs along a stony path through woodland and across former vineyard land. This sequence gives you a concrete sense of the route in addition to its distance and duration, without comparing the two routes solely by how long they take.

Woodland and nature

Rivarennes is located in the Parc naturel régional de la Brenne. According to the 2025 INPN inventory, the Bois du ruisseau des Chézeaux is a type 1 ZNIEFF, includes Rivarennes and covers 430.42 hectares. The area encompasses different types of woodland: acid-loving forests on the plateau and calcareous forests on the slopes. The trout-bearing Ruisseau des Chézeaux, which flows into the Creuse, is also part of this natural area.

Rare plants found there include Carex digitata, Hordelymus europaeus and the Turk’s cap lily (Lilium martagon). Together with the stream and the different types of woodland, these species give the natural area its own distinct character. If you want nature and outdoor activities to be at the heart of your stay, you can use the walking trails and this landscape as different points of reference when planning your days.

Architectural history and planning your visit

The Church of Saint-Denis dates from the 12th century. The richly sculpted apse and an apsidiole, both decorated with modillions, are preserved from the original Romanesque building. The church was listed as a historic monument by decree on 26 January 1927. It is open almost every day; check access before your visit. Information about the church’s history is available to visitors.

Other historic sites offer a range of different points of interest. The Camp du Gourde is an earthwork enclosure dating to the end of the Iron Age, covering just under two hectares and overlooking the entire Creuse valley from a rocky outcrop. The Mont calvaire d’Usseau was inaugurated in 1937 on a steep slope in the valley. The Château de la Tour in Rivarennes dates from the 14th century. The well at the Lavoir des Chézeaux has a history of use dating back to the Middle Ages.
