Orsennes offers a clear mix of cultural history, walks and a fishing pond that is open seasonally. If you are planning time outdoors, you can compare the length and difficulty rating of the routes directly; for the Etang communal du Rigollet, the fishing season is what matters. Historic monuments add other points of interest: the Église du prieuré Saint-Martin, the Dolmen du Chardy and the Château du Breuil Yvain bring traces of different periods to your stay.

Church, dolmen and château

The Église du prieuré Saint-Martin has major construction phases dating from the 12th and 15th centuries and has been listed as a historic monument since 21 October 1925. The construction phases and listing date mark different aspects: the building’s origins and its later protected status. The Dolmen du Chardy has a specific measurement: the historic monument is 3.5 metres long. The origins of the Château du Breuil Yvain date back to 1236. Sections of its double moats remain, and you can walk along the former moats. This depends on local access conditions; check them before your visit if the walk is part of your plan.

Walks with different time requirements

The Circuit pédestre des étangs loops around Orsennes. The walk is 7.6 kilometres long, takes 1 hour and 55 minutes, and is rated very easy. Typical of the Marche Berrichonne, it goes from pond to pond; the route features oak trees, chestnut trees, fountains and washhouses. This gives you a specific duration as well as an idea of the landscape and built features that make this walk distinctive. The Circuit pédestre du château du Breuil-Yvain has a different time requirement and level of difficulty: it is 15.4 kilometres long, rated difficult, and takes 3 hours and 45 minutes. The difference between the durations is 1 hour and 50 minutes; the ratings also range from very easy to difficult. This means you can choose based not only on distance, but also on the time available and the stated level of difficulty. Check local conditions before setting out.

Bocage landscape and Etang communal du Rigollet

The Circuit des chemins gallo-romains offers a preserved bocage landscape in Orsennes, with ponds, hedgerows and vineyard huts. Bocage refers to a landscape divided by hedgerows; the hedgerows give this landscape feature a tangible point of reference. For travellers who want to take the landscape itself into account as well as distances, this offers a different perspective from a walk that goes from pond to pond.

Close to the village centre is the Etang communal du Rigollet, which covers about one hectare. Fishing for carp and whitefish is permitted from 1 April to 31 October. So if you want to fish during your visit, plan your trip within this period. There is also a fitness trail and picnic tables by the pond. These complement the fishing focus with an opportunity to exercise and take a break.
