George Sand’s estate, Romanesque frescoes and a walking trail offer three distinct highlights for a stay in Nohant-Vic. A guided tour of the house, a permanent exhibition in the reception building and an easy outdoor loop are separate activities. For planning purposes, comparing the times is helpful: the guided tour and the trail each take about an hour, but they are different activities.

George Sand’s Estate

The estate includes the house, outbuildings, farmyard, garden, park and cemetery. The Maison de George Sand can be visited on a guided tour lasting about an hour. Free visitor materials are available in seven languages. Plan the tour as a separate activity and check the latest dates and conditions before your trip.

A permanent exhibition in the reception building focuses on Maurice Sand’s marionettes, stage sets and props; please check the current exhibition conditions before your visit. It offers a look at the world of the stage represented by these objects, providing a distinct focus alongside the house tour. If you are particularly interested in marionettes and stage equipment, this is a good reason to include the reception building in your plans.

The garden and park are freely accessible at no charge. This distinguishes the outdoor areas from the guided visit to the Maison: you can set aside time for the garden and park independently of the tour, which lasts about an hour. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

Church Art in Nohant-Vic

The Eglise Saint-Martin de Vic has restored Romanesque frescoes dating from the 12th century. They depict important scenes from the childhood of Christ. In 2025, interactive digital devices with visual and audio elements were used to help visitors discover the frescoes. Before your trip, check whether this feature is still available.

The Eglise Sainte Anne was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its wall paintings are located on the apse wall and at the entrance to the choir. The two churches can be distinguished by different features: for Saint-Martin, the period of the frescoes and their subject matter are specified; for Sainte Anne, the construction period and the location of the wall paintings are given. This allows you to focus on religious imagery, architectural history or the location of the paintings.

Walking Trail and Getting There

The “Circuit pédestre n° 3 – Nohant, village champêtre” is an easy loop around the Domaine de George Sand in Nohant-Vic and takes about an hour. Together with the guided tour, it offers a clear comparison of how long each activity takes: one hour for visiting the Maison, and another for the walk around the estate. When planning your time, you can decide whether to focus on the guided visit or the walk.

The Maison de George Sand can be reached via the D 943 from Châteauroux or Montluçon. It is also possible to travel by bus from Châteauroux railway station. Check routes and timetables in advance so you can plan your journey around your sightseeing plans.

Across from the Domaine de George Sand, the Bureau d'Information Touristique provides information about the region and surrounding area. As visitor service details can change with seasonal operations, check the latest information before your visit.
