The capstone of the Dolmen du Creuset is 3.20 metres long, 2.70 metres wide and 90 centimetres thick. The dolmen is in Luçay-le-Libre, on the road to Reuilly, and is also known as the Dolmen de la Pierre-Folle. Its supporting stones lie flat rather than vertically. The chamber is oriented from southwest to northeast, with its entrance in the southwest. Its dimensions, construction and orientation are three specific aspects of the monument to consider.

Architectural history at Château du Coudray

Château du Coudray offers a different kind of architectural history. The manor house dates from the 15th century and was remodelled in the 17th century. The château has a square entrance tower and a semicircular tower. Another 15th-century building has a main entrance and a gallery supported by five and three pillars. The manor house, different tower shapes and gallery offer a range of architectural details; the building phases also reflect development over time.

Since 28 December 1978, the façades and roofs, the arcaded gallery and the château’s surviving fireplace have been listed as historic monuments by decree. The château is privately owned. If you are considering a visit, check access in advance.

Church, hilltop and washhouse

Église Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul was built in the 19th century on the site of an older building. It stands on a fortified hilltop, where the ditches are still visible. This allows you to consider the church’s architectural history alongside traces of the fortifications. A washhouse (lavoir) is also listed at the Ruisseau des Cotets.

Cultural interests and practical orientation

When planning your trip, it helps to ask whether you are mainly interested in comparing architectural forms or changes over time. At the dolmen, the focus is on its dimensions and the orientation of the chamber; at the château, it is on the building phases and different architectural elements. In chronological terms, you can compare the manor house’s remodelling in the 17th century with the church’s construction in the 19th century. The fortified hilltop adds visible traces of the terrain, while the washhouse at the Ruisseau des Cotets offers another point of reference for the area’s history.

If you are looking for a holiday rental for a cultural stay, you can start by deciding what interests you most: the dolmen’s construction, the château’s architecture or the church on the fortified hilltop. This lets you choose where to stay based on your interest in architecture and local history.
