The Musée de la Chemiserie et de l’Elégance Masculine offers a special insight into the textile history of Argenton-sur-Creuse. It is housed in the town’s first clothing workshop and traces the history of the textile industry in the Argenton area in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 17 September 2003, it has been recognised as a “Musée de France” under the French Heritage Code.

Textile History and Buildings

The textile collections span from the late 17th century to the present day. Alongside clothing, the museum preserves tools and machines once used in garment manufacturing, as well as archives from local businesses. Objects from different centuries and traces of local economic life thus come together under one roof: the clothing tells the story of fashion, while the tools and machines bring the manufacturing process into focus.

The Chapelle Saint-Benoît adds a building with a clearly defined period of construction. It was built between 1497 and 1502 and classified as a “Monument historique” by decree on 31 May 1944. Today, the chapel hosts exhibitions; the exhibition programme may change. Another distinctive detail can be found at the “Good Lady” chapel: its bell tower bears a 6.50-metre-high gilded statue of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus.

The Maison des Arts also brings together local architectural history and contemporary art. The Moulin du Rabois was rebuilt in 1936 and became the Maison des Arts in 2004. The Centre d’Art Contemporain le Rabois is on the ground floor; its exhibition programme may change. These two places offer different ways to explore historical traces and contemporary art in Argenton-sur-Creuse.

Lanes, the Creuse and City Tours

Along the Creuse, the overhanging balconies of the houses in Argenton-sur-Creuse are known as “galleries.” This local term draws attention to a specific architectural feature of the townscape. Guided city tours take visitors to historic heritage sites, along the banks of the Creuse, to mills and through the town’s lanes. Dates may change. The “Balade de ville” starts at Place de la République, providing a clear starting point for finding your way around.

For a different kind of itinerary, the GR de Pays Val de Creuse offers a hiking option: the route is 104 kilometres long and can be completed in five days or in themed day stages of 14 to 25 kilometres. The stage lengths allow you to compare a multi-day hike with shorter, themed sections, without requiring the same time commitment for both formats.

Water Activities and Market

The Centre aquatique offers a variety of indoor and outdoor facilities. Indoors, there is a 25-metre sports pool, a leisure area with a slide, counter-current channel and bubble benches, a children’s pool, a whirlpool and a sauna. Outdoors, there is a leisure pool with a bubble lagoon, current channel and water cannon, a three-lane slide and a large paddling pool. Availability of the outdoor facilities is seasonal; amenities and access may change. The centre also has an 18-hole mini-golf course that is open year-round. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

The weekly market in Argenton-sur-Creuse is held on Saturdays throughout the year; market dates may change. It offers cheese, fruit, vegetables and local products, although the selection may also vary. The market thus complements the cultural and leisure activities with a regular day of the week and regional produce.
