Semblançay combines medieval architectural features with works of art from the 16th century, as well as the 28-kilometre Boucle 52, a moderate circular hike through the town and other named places. This offers two distinct focuses: architectural and art history, or a longer hike. This distinction is useful for planning: the route can be assessed by its length and rating, while the historical remains represent different periods and architectural styles.
Architecture and Art History in Semblançay
The Vestiges du château were listed as a historic monument by decree on 6 March 1947. They include a square keep dating from the 12th century; the ground floor and first floor have survived. Three specific aspects of this structure can therefore be distinguished: its square shape, its medieval origins and its two surviving levels. Together, they provide a clear architectural point of reference for distinguishing its form, construction period and surviving extent.
The nave of the Église Saint Martin dates from the late 11th century. The church contains a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary and a recumbent terracotta Christ, both from the 16th century. The choir also features stained-glass windows donated by Jacques de Beaune. Here, an early building core meets significantly later works of art; the donation of the windows adds a distinct historical connection. This sequence brings together architecture, materials and religious imagery without conflating their different dates.
The Château de la Source adds another architectural feature. A perimeter wall and doors dating from the 16th century have survived, as well as a round tower and ruins. Compared with the square keep of the Vestiges du château, the variety of surviving elements stands out here: wall, doors, round tower and ruins. The wall and doors date from the 16th century; the other features add further forms of historic fabric.
Les Rouchoux Natural Area
The Les Rouchoux site (Espace Naturel Sensible) covers 50 hectares. It includes 30 hectares of woodland, 16.6 hectares of meadows and 4 hectares of pond area. Woodland is therefore the largest of the individually listed areas; the meadows and pond are separate, numerically smaller parts of the site. Information panels invite visitors to discover the area’s biodiversity, and the site is open to the public. Access conditions may vary in exceptional weather. If you plan to visit this natural area, take this restriction into account and check the conditions before your visit.
Hiking and Choosing a Route
The Boucle 52 is a 28-kilometre, moderate circular hike through Semblançay, Le Serrain, Sonzay and Neuillé-Pont-Pierre. Its length and rating provide two different points of reference when choosing the route: 28 kilometres describes its distance, while “moderate” indicates its difficulty level. This makes it a distinct hiking option. These specific details can help you decide whether the route matches the distance and level of challenge you want for your trip.
For hiking, parking is available at the Salle des fêtes Jean-Hubé and at the sports hall. Both are designated parking options for hikers. The various places named along the Boucle 52 also help you understand its course as a circular hike. This lets you choose your focus: architecture and art with their different historical connections, or a clearly described hike with a set distance and moderate difficulty.
