Ligueil combines architectural history with two walks that both start and end in the town, but explore different landscapes. If you would like to include historic buildings and a walk through the hilly countryside in your trip, you’ll find some specific starting points here. The annual celebration at the Notre-Dame-des-Anges Chapel and the percussion festival also add their own distinctive touches.

Churches and Architectural History

Saint-Martin Church was founded in the 12th century and altered in the 13th and 15th centuries. Its choir has been partially protected as a historic monument since June 12, 1926. The high altar, with its tabernacle and altarpiece, dates from the 17th century; an altarpiece is the structure behind the altar. The church thus brings together different periods of construction and furnishings.

La Seigneurie also brings together several chapters in the town’s history: the imposing building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Since the municipality acquired it in 1922, it has housed Ligueil’s town hall. Château d’Epigny is a small château dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, surrounded by a wooded, walled park. Its façades and roofs have been partially protected as historic monuments since November 27, 1951.

La Chancellerie, a 16th-century building, stands on Rue Aristide Briand. It may have been the residence of the treasurers of the Barony of Ligueil; this historical attribution is a possibility, not a certainty. Notre-Dame-des-Anges Chapel was rebuilt in its present-day Neo-Gothic form in 1871. Together, these buildings offer a range of historical and architectural associations without requiring you to take any one style as your benchmark.

Two Walks, Two Landscapes

The easy “L’Esves dans son écrin” trail is 9.4 kilometers long and takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. It passes through the Esves valley and follows the river’s meanders. Described landscape features include tree-lined paths, farms and small hilltop châteaux with views of the surrounding countryside.

Also rated easy, the 9.6-kilometer “Balade entre l’Esves et la Ligoire” takes approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes. The route follows both rivers through hilly countryside with farms and hamlets. The trails are similar in length and duration. Both walks start and end in Ligueil. Check the latest route information before setting out, as descriptions or trail conditions may change.

Events and Getting There

Every year on August 15, a ceremony, pilgrimage and procession take place at Notre-Dame-des-Anges Chapel. The specific proceedings may vary; if you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the latest information about the date.

Les Percufolies is an annual festival in Ligueil dedicated to percussion. The program includes street performances and concerts.
