Thiron Gardais offers several ways to plan a stay: the Romanesque Abbey Church of Sainte-Trinité, gardens and historic sites, trails through woodland and farmland, and the Étang des Moines. The town is also on the Véloscénie. This allows you to plan cultural history, gardens and time outdoors as distinct highlights.

Abbey History in Architecture and Gardens

The Abbey Church of Sainte-Trinité dates from the early 12th century. Its Romanesque nave is 64 metres long and 12 metres wide. The date and dimensions complement each other: the early 12th century places the building in time, while its measurements bring its spatial form into focus.

The Grange aux Dîmes at the Domaine de l’Abbaye was built by the abbey’s monks in the 15th century. It was used to store in-kind payments from the tithe. Together with the abbey church, it illustrates different aspects of the monastic heritage: the sacred building and the storage of dues.

The gardens at the Domaine de l’Abbaye cover four hectares. They include a vegetable garden, a rose garden, fruit trees and heather beds. The mix of kitchen garden, roses, fruit and heather creates different accents throughout the grounds and adds garden culture to the story of the abbey.

The historic garden of the Collège royal et militaire has also been redesigned, with the aim of restoring its former harmony and balance. A visit to the Collège includes the museum and garden, but not Stéphane Bern’s private home. Visiting arrangements are seasonal and may change. Check the current visiting conditions if the Collège is to be a highlight of your stay.

Both self-guided and guided tours are available at the Domaine de l’Abbaye. You can choose between exploring independently and taking a tour with commentary. The Domaine’s three escape game rooms offer a different experience from its architecture and garden culture.

Trails and Landscape

The circular trail “L’abbaye de Thiron-Gardais” passes through woodland and along the edge of farmland. Its route is characterised by wooded sections and cultivated countryside. This makes it a distinct way to experience the landscape alongside the abbey church and gardens.

The circular trail “Doux plateaux et premiers reliefs du Perche” follows picturesque roads along the edge of the forest and through fields. Its pleasant, gently undulating terrain makes it suitable for families. The descriptions of the forest edge, fields and elevation profile give this route its own character when choosing a trail.

Thiron Gardais lies on the Véloscénie between Paris and Mont-Saint-Michel. The route places the town on a longer connection between these two destinations. When planning, you can consider this long-distance link alongside local attractions such as the abbey’s history, the gardens and the circular trails described here.

More Outdoor Activities and Things to Do in Town

Camping, fishing and walking are all possible at the Étang des Moines. This spot offers a choice of outdoor activities. When planning your stay, you can make time at the Étang a highlight in its own right, alongside cultural visits and the trails described here.

The Cel’Tiron Festival takes place every two years and celebrates the close ties between Thiron-Gardais and the Celtic countries. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates when planning.

The mix of abbey history, gardens, circular trails and activities at the Étang offers different ways to discover Thiron Gardais. You can focus your stay on architecture and historic sites, explore the landscape on one of the trails, or use a specific festival date as the starting point for your plans.
