Pontgouin brings together several distinct themes: Vauban’s Écluses de Boizard and the unfinished Canal Louis XIV project, the building history of the Église Saint-Lubin, and historical landmarks such as the Ferme du Plessis and the Menhir du Vaugelay. The GR® de pays Vallée de l’Eure adds a long-distance hiking trail that passes through Pontgouin. Practical considerations also matter when planning your trip: check the seasonal access arrangements at the Château de la Rivière in advance; fishing at the Étang des Abysses is possible by prior reservation. Cultural history and hiking therefore offer two distinct perspectives on the destination.

Locks as the starting point of an unfinished project

The Écluses de Boizard are listed as historic monuments and were built by Vauban. They are also the starting point of the Canal Louis XIV. The canal was intended to run from Pontgouin to Maintenon and carry water to the Palace of Versailles, but it was never completed. These details belong together: the locks mark the starting point, while the planned waterway to Versailles remained a project. This distinguishes the actual structure from the larger canal plan without implying that the canal was completed.

Church construction, farmsteads and historic landmarks

Construction of the Église Saint-Lubin dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. During an extension in the 16th century, a side aisle with four bays was added for parishioners. These dates indicate two building phases: the medieval church and a later extension featuring a specifically identified architectural element. The Ferme du Plessis has been documented since 1219 and is part of a tourist trail of fortified farmsteads. The year places the farmstead in a historical chronology; the trail also connects it with the theme of fortified farmsteads. A plaque identifies the Maison natale du Cardinal Pie as Cardinal Pie’s birthplace. The Menhir du Vaugelay adds a megalithic monument measuring 4.50 metres in length to these landmarks.

The Château de la Rivière on the long-distance trail

The Château de la Rivière is a well-preserved building in the style of Louis XIII; it also has a well-preserved dovecote dating from the 18th century. The GR® de pays Vallée de l’Eure long-distance trail runs from Anet to La Loupe, is 160 kilometres long and passes through Pontgouin by the château. Its total length places this stretch within a longer hiking route; it is not a measure of a single section in Pontgouin. Check seasonal access to the château before your trip.

Fishing by prior reservation

Fishing at the Étang des Abysses in Pontgouin is possible by prior reservation. If you plan this activity, confirm the reservation arrangements before your trip. The activities have different planning requirements: the long-distance trail passes through Pontgouin, while fishing at the pond requires a prior reservation.
