Montreuil combines specific hiking options with a distinctive natural setting and a rich cultural heritage. For planning purposes, the listed routes can be compared by distance and duration. The area’s history spans from a Neolithic dolmen to a church with construction phases spanning several centuries; protected species can also be found on the natural hillside.

Compare Hiking Trails by Distance and Time

The “En Forêt de Dreux” circular trail starts in Montreuil, is 7 km long, and is listed as taking approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. The long-distance GR22 trail has two other specific route details: an 11.5 km section runs from the Pavillon de Chasse to Montreuil, with a listed duration of approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes. A 4.2 km route runs from Montreuil to Muzy, is described as the Montreuil–Dreux connection, and takes approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes.

The routes differ in both distance and stated duration. This makes it possible to compare a circular trail with sections of the GR22 using specific figures. The GR22 itself is a long-distance trail between Paris and Le Mont-Saint-Michel. The route to Muzy is also called the Montreuil–Dreux connection; the two names describe different aspects of the same route. The stated times are approximate and help you factor the length of each hike into your day’s plans.

Chalk Hillside and Protected Nature

La Côte de Montreuil lies along the Eure, on a long chalk hillside with often-steep slopes. The area has been preserved as a natural site. The south-facing hillside overlooks the commune of Montreuil; a 3-hectare area belongs to the Conservatoire du patrimoine naturel de la Région Centre. Protected species can be found on the hillside, including certain orchid species and some species of Mediterranean origin.

Here, geological features combine with the protection of distinctive plant species. The chalk hillside offers a natural contrast to the buildings and historic traces that also define Montreuil. Nearby, you can also see 79 arches of the Aqueduc de l’Avre. Inaugurated in 1893, the structure is part of the infrastructure that supplies Paris with drinking water.

Church and Historic Traces

The Église Saint-Pierre in Montreuil has been listed as a French historic monument since 1988. Its main construction phases date from the 14th and 15th centuries and the second quarter of the 16th century; one construction phase is dated to 1545. The portal dates from the 16th century. Remnants of stained glass from the same period have survived, while wall paintings remain hidden beneath the plaster. The church’s different construction phases and surviving features make it a rich testament to local history.

A Neolithic dolmen, dating to approximately 20 centuries before Christ, survives in the hamlet of Cocherelle. The Dolmen de Cocherelle can be seen from Rue du Dolmen, at the edge of private property, but is not open to visitors. This is an important distinction for planning: the dolmen can be viewed from the road, but it is not an accessible visitor site.

The private Château de Fermaincourt also illustrates the transformation of a former religious estate into an aristocratic residence. From the hillsides of Montreuil, it offers a panorama over the Eure Valley, with the Aqueduc de l’Avre visible in the background. The château remains private property. Its historical context and the view described here can therefore be appreciated alongside the publicly visible arches of the aqueduct, without requiring a visit to the château.

Digital history and heritage tours are called “Parcours Numériques Histoire et Patrimoine”. A municipal notice dates their introduction to July 2021; check the signs on site. This helps distinguish historical information from practical guidance for the day of your visit.
