Villegenon brings together distinctive architectural forms, Stone Age traces and a walking route through bocage landscapes. This makes the village an interesting destination for travellers looking to combine architectural history, archaeology and outdoor activity in one place. Two routes offer different perspectives: a walk through bocage and past ponds, and a cycling route linking a series of places.

Buildings and Historical Traces

The Church of Saint-Georges has a rectangular floor plan, a flat-ended choir and two aisles. These three features describe different aspects of the building: its overall layout, the end of the choir and its division into side sections. The Prunesac priory was founded in 1130. Villegenon thus brings together a specific architectural description and a clearly dated piece of building history; the form and the historical date each tell their own story of the architectural heritage.

The Calvaire Saint-Christophe was built in the 1950s; its plinth incorporates a crankshaft, a valve, a piston and a cylinder liner. A festival dedicated to Saint Christopher had long been held in Villegenon; the blessing of automobiles began there in the 1930s. The chronology differs: the blessings began before the Calvaire was built in the 1950s.

In Villegenon, worked and polished flints were used as a means of exchange in the Neolithic period. Building remains on the banks of the Nère and the Croslaie point to a Gallo-Roman presence. The traces thus differ both in period and form: different finds attest to the Gallo-Roman presence than to the Stone Age use of flint. The Gué des Ruesses quarry is considered a worthwhile place to visit for anyone interested in stone.

Forests, Waters and Protected Habitats

The Natura 2000 site FR2400518 – Massifs forestiers et rivières du Pays-Fort covers 3,104 hectares. Its habitats include riparian forests and acidophilous Atlantic beech forests with holly in the understorey and, in some areas, yew. The protected area also includes streams that support populations of white-clawed crayfish and brook lamprey. These species are found particularly in the River Layon.

The Aulnaie-FrĂŞnaie de Prunesac habitat covers 10.1 hectares, lies on the banks of the Croulaie stream and is designated as a major ZNIEFF habitat. These details add a specifically named habitat and its area to the picture of the forests and waters.

Walking and Cycling

The La Boucle des Silex walking route passes through bocage landscapes and detours past numerous ponds. It also runs alongside the grounds of the Château, which are privately owned and off-limits to visitors. The route’s landscape and the boundary around the private grounds are therefore important points to bear in mind when planning.

The Paysages du Pays-Fort cycling route offers a different way to explore: the 2025 cycling guide gives its itinerary from La Balance via Jars and Villegenon to Vailly-sur-Sauldre; later editions may change the route. Unlike the walk through bocage and past ponds, the cycling route links a series of places. This makes it possible to choose between a landscape of ponds and an itinerary connecting several places.

Dining in the Village

For meal planning, the La Récréation Gourmande restaurant in Villegenon is a specific option: it serves homemade dishes made with fresh produce.
