In Thauvenay, discoveries of Crottin de Chavignol and Sancerre wine come together with a rural landscape. The range of experiences is specific: at the La Bête Noire educational farm, visitors can learn how Crottin is made; Domaine Éric Louis combines guided cellar tours with a wine tasting. A Jeep Wine Tour adds four nostalgic wine-tourism excursions by jeep. Vineyards, wooded areas and meadows provide a scenic backdrop. The parish church of Saint-Pierre and the surviving towers on a château estate also offer cultural points of interest during a stay.

Crottin de Chavignol: production and aging

At the La BĂŞte Noire educational farm in Thauvenay, you can learn how Crottin de Chavignol is made. This is complemented by tastings of five stages of maturation, accompanied by a glass of Loire wine or apple juice. The different stages of maturation make the product itself the focus of the tasting: you can compare the five varieties rather than try just one. This puts the production process at the heart of the experience as well as the enjoyment of the cheese. If you plan a visit, check the dates in advance; schedules may change.

Sancerre wine: cellar visit or jeep excursion

At Domaine Éric Louis, a guided tour takes you through typical Sancerre wine cellars. The tasting that follows includes five Sancerre wines and Crottin de Chavignol. The cellar visit and tasting are therefore designed as a combined experience. The Jeep Wine Tour offers a different kind of wine-tourism discovery: it comprises four nostalgic excursions by jeep, which can optionally be paired with wine, Crottin de Chavignol and apéritif platters. The difference lies in the format: a guided tour followed by a tasting on the one hand, and a jeep excursion with optional food and drink pairings on the other. Check the current dates and prices for both experiences before adding them to your plans.

Rural surroundings and Loire à Vélo

The landscape around Thauvenay includes vineyards, wooded areas and meadows. These features give the place a rural character that stands apart from the specific wine and cheese experiences without being disconnected from them: wine is part of both the culinary experiences and the landscape. Thauvenay also borders the Canal latéral à la Loire. The La Bête Noire farm is near the Loire à Vélo route. If you plan to include this route in your trip, check the current route conditions; they may change. This way, the landscape and culinary experiences can be considered different aspects of a stay without linking them into a fixed itinerary.

Church and surviving towers

The parish church of Saint-Pierre was built in 1865 to plans by Charles Guillard, the architect for the arrondissement. Its year of construction and the architect’s name give the church a clear historical context. Two towers from the enclosure, with loopholes, also survive on the château estate. These two features offer different points of interest in the built environment: the church, with its construction date and architectural design, and the towers, with their surviving enclosure and loopholes. Together with wine, Crottin de Chavignol and the landscape, they make for a stay that is not limited to a single kind of discovery.
