The historic and tourist trail of Val d’Yèvre winds for 4,000 metres through the history of a former agricultural penal colony for young people. Its 16 information panels make the site’s past the guiding thread for a cultural stay in Saint-Germain-Du-Puy.

The Val d’Yèvre trail

At each information panel, QR codes provide additional information, while seven themed stops structure the historical exploration. Depending on how much detail you want, allow around 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. The time required depends on how thoroughly you wish to engage with the content. This makes it easy to plan the trail as either a shorter or a more extensive activity.

The former agricultural penal colony for young people operated from 1847 to 1924. During that time, it took in around 5,000 boys aged 8 to 20. The dates and age range give the trail a precise social-history focus: it tells the story of an institution and its young inmates.

Architecture and heritage

Well-preserved buildings dating from the mid-19th century remain at the site. The chalet-like buildings have rounded openings decorated with brick, recalling the architecture of the Sologne. Their shapes, arches and brick ornamentation add tangible architectural details to the historical theme.

The Château de Turly is an episcopal residence and has been listed as a Monument historique since 16 December 2020. Part of the protected estate lies in Saint-Germain-Du-Puy; the estate is privately owned. Its garden is laid out in a formal design on a slope. Features include parterres, groups of trees arranged in a quincunx, an ornamental lawn and a boulingrin. The term “quincunx” refers to a staggered arrangement of groups of trees.

The 14 Stations of the Cross in the church of Saint-Germain-Du-Puy were created by sculptor Gilbert Privat, who was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1921. The Rabot mill in Fenestrelay, on the Yèvre, has been documented since 1189. At the site, visitors can admire the well-preserved mill building and its large waterwheel.

Also in Fenestrelay, a splendidly restored former manor house preserves a portal with a square dovecote above it. The dovecote’s roof has three stone dormers with flat gables and three finials, apparently dating from the 17th century. The Château de Villemenard preserves a gallery in the style of Louis XII, considered rare in Berry.
