Saint-Bouize brings together the Loire floodplain and a history of architecture and water engineering. The church, château, canal bridge and feeder channel provide cultural highlights; there is also a local route, the Loire à Vélo cycle route and an equestrian centre. When planning your stay, you can choose between heritage and a range of activities.

Landscape and heritage

Most of Saint-Bouize lies in the Loire floodplain. This expansive landscape forms the setting for the village, while its buildings provide tangible points of historical interest. The entire Église Saint-Baudel was listed as a historic monument by decree on 24 December 2024. The church is therefore a clearly defined heritage attraction for travellers who want to discover Saint-Bouize through its history, too.

The château through several historical layers

The main construction phases of the Château de Lagrange-Montalivet date from the late 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. The château stands on the site of the Château fort de Vèvre, which was mentioned in 1090. This date refers to the mention of the older fortress, not to the construction of today’s Château de Lagrange-Montalivet. Architecturally, the château consists of a central building with a mansard roof, flanked by two pavilions. Its predecessor, construction phases and layout make it possible to trace different historical layers.

Another historical thread leads to Jean-Pierre Bachasson de Montalivet, a minister under Napoleon I. In 1807, he bought the Château de la Grange and had 24 Lesueur panels from Paris’s Hôtel Lambert rehung on the first floor. This episode adds a specific story about artworks and their relocation to the building’s history.

Two forms of water engineering

Water engineering is also represented in different forms. The present-day Pont-canal du Moule consists of two arches, each 5 m wide. The Boisseau feeder channel starts at the La Gavroche weir in Saint-Bouize and is 5.75 km long. The two structures can be described in different ways: for the canal bridge, the focus is on the number and width of its arches; for the channel, it is on its starting point and length. The history of water engineering thus ranges from a clearly described arch structure to a longer installation.

Routes and equestrian activities

The Boucle de Saint Bouize is an open 6.3 km route in Saint-Bouize. The signposted Loire à Vélo cycle route passes through Saint-Bouize and connects Belleville-sur-Loire with Cuffy. The information describes different planning details: the Boucle has a stated distance, while the cycle route can be identified by its two endpoints and its course. Check route conditions before setting off.

For horse-riding enthusiasts, the “Les Ecuries de l'Aubois sancerrois” equestrian centre in Saint-Bouize offers riding lessons and is designated a “Centre de Tourisme Equestre”. If you plan to take part, check availability before your trip. The route and riding lessons offer a different focus from the history of the church, château and water engineering.

When choosing accommodation, it helps to compare these themes: the buildings offer historical discoveries, while the route and riding lessons represent different activities. Consider whether you want to include Saint-Bouize in your travel plans mainly for its heritage or for an activity.
