More than 60 characteristic plant species shape the “Pelouses des Chaumes du Verniller”; at the same time, Notre-Dame du Subdray church has been listed as a historic monument in France since 1926. These two specific highlights give you a clear choice between nature and architectural history when planning your trip. Other attractions include the Rampenne, walking routes and an arts programme that can be described by its disciplines.
Natural Areas and Plant Diversity
The “Pelouses des Chaumes du Verniller” inventory area lies partly within the commune of Le Subdray and covers 185.2 hectares. It stretches across hills and slopes in a triangle between the A71, the Luchaire site and the centre of Le Subdray. More than 60 characteristic plant species are found in this area, including around 15 protected species. The landscape and plant diversity give the place two specific nature-related themes that you can weigh differently when planning your trip.
Another nature-related feature is the ecological inventory area “Pelouses, ourlets et chênaie thermophiles du Bois de Saint-Florent.” Part of this area belongs to the Natura 2000 protected site “Coteaux, bois et marais calcaires de la Champagne Berrichone.” Unlike the details about the size and plant species of the Chaumes, the focus here is on its partial inclusion in a designated Natura 2000 site.
The Rampenne and the Landscape
The Rampenne is a river that emerges in Le Subdray near the Bois de Cologne and close to Tronçay. It then runs through several fields and crosses paths towards the Bois des Déserts and Vignou. This adds a different landscape perspective to the botanically distinctive Chaumes: a watercourse whose described route crosses fields and paths. The two themes are easy to distinguish: the river’s course on the one hand, and the hills, slopes and plant life of the inventory area on the other.
Church and Memorial
Notre-Dame du Subdray is a recently restored example of Romanesque architecture. The church has been listed as a historic monument in France since 1926. If you are planning a visit, check in advance what visiting options are available. A stele near the football pitch commemorates those who fell in the war. Two different aspects of the local heritage are thus highlighted: Romanesque architecture and a memorial with its own commemorative purpose.
Art and Events
On Sunday, 7 June 2026, “Les Arts dans le jardin” was held for the third year in a row. This edition focused on ceramics, drawing, painting, pastels and calligraphy. Visitors could discover works by both established and newly selected artists throughout the day. The programme also included a demonstration of Évelyne Leblet’s millinery skills. The disciplines mentioned bring together visual art and calligraphy with a craft contribution, offering a concrete picture of this past edition.
Walking Routes
A walk organised by the Entente des Marcheurs de Trouy in Le Subdray included four routes of 8, 14, 21 and 29 kilometres. The 14- and 21-kilometre routes fell between the shortest and longest options, showing the range of choices available at the time. The GRP ChB-10-C also includes the section “La Vallée – Le Subdray – Les Déserts.” You can therefore find different types of walking routes: specified distances for an event and a named section of the GRP.
