Herry brings together trails in the protected Loire natural area and the architectural history of Église Saint-Loup. There are eight walks of varying lengths to choose from around the town; two named routes also offer specific alternatives, and another can be extended. The route lengths provide a practical starting point for planning, while the Loire landscapes and the church showcase different sides of a stay here. If you’re looking for accommodation in Herry, you can first decide whether nature trails or cultural heritage will be the focus of your time in the area.
Val de Loire and Saulières
The Val de Loire nature reserve is two kilometers from the center of Herry. It was designated a nature reserve by ministerial decree on November 21, 1995. In the Val d’Herry, the Saulières site is a representative stretch of the Loire River’s islands; erosion and sedimentation have shaped the landscape there. Le Val d’Herry is open to the public, but visitors must strictly comply with the regulations of the Val de Loire National Nature Reserve. Check these requirements before your visit.
Hiking Trails and Alternatives
There are eight hikes around Herry, ranging from 6.5 to 34.5 kilometers. One marked route is the Circuit de la réserve: this 6.5-kilometer hiking and mountain biking trail runs along the Loire within the nature reserve and can be extended by three kilometers. The Circuit de la Gargaude, by contrast, offers five- or nine-kilometer options, partly follows the Loire à Vélo, and offers views of the Gargaude islands. The Val d’Herry also has a 1.5-kilometer discovery trail at the Saulières site. The options range from a short nature trail to longer hikes; the two named circuits differ both in their route options and in the landscapes they pass through. Check the latest route information and trail conditions before setting out.
The Architectural History of Église Saint-Loup
Église Saint-Loup adds a cultural and historical focus to the natural setting. It was listed as a Monument historique following a protection order dated September 25, 2025. Significant construction phases date from the 13th, 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries. The oldest surviving parts include the choir and crossing, dating from the first half of the 13th century. The sequence thus spans the earliest surviving structures to later construction phases that continued into the 19th century.
