Brinon-Sur-Sauldre can be explored through its distinctive buildings and varied landscape themes: the Sauldre Canal runs through the town, while named trails bring nature, forests and ponds into focus. The Église Saint-Barthélémy, the château and the Les Bouffards lock site add buildings from different periods to these discoveries. You can plan your trip around cultural history, trails and nature.
Walking, the Canal and the Landscape
The Sauldre Canal runs through Brinon-sur-Sauldre, connecting Blancafort with Lamotte-Beuvron. The signposted Sente Bleue is a walking trail along the canal in Brinon-sur-Sauldre. If you plan to take this trail, check the route conditions before setting out, as they may change. The Circuit Raboliot – petit itinéraire also passes through the town. It offers a chance to discover the local flora and fauna as well as the Sauldre Canal.
The Maison de la ForĂŞt offers another way to explore nature: it presents the landscapes of the land of Raboliot and the local flora and fauna. It also introduces traditional occupations associated with the forest and wood processing. Three walking trails round out the offer. As trail details may change, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting out.
Descriptions of the other routes highlight different features. The Circuit du bois des buissons passes through a succession of forest and pond landscapes, where the stories of Maurice Genevoix come to life again. The Clémont–Brinon-sur-Sauldre loop passes through the Sologne, follows in Raboliot’s footsteps and offers a chance to discover its flora and fauna. Thus, one trail focuses on forests, ponds and literature, while the loop highlights the Sologne and Raboliot.
Church, Château and Canal Structures
The Église Saint-Barthélémy has been listed as a historic monument since 1926. Its nave dates from the 12th century; the choir and polygonal ambulatory were built in the 15th century. The bell tower also defines the building: it is built entirely of wood and rises from the floor of the nave. The different construction periods offer a clear insight into several phases of the building’s architecture.
The château in Brinon-sur-Sauldre was built in 1604 for Jacques de Senectere. The Les Bouffards lock site tells a different construction story: it comprises a lock, a lock keeper’s house and a bridge, built between 1865 and 1869. The site is considered representative of the lock sites along the Sauldre Canal. In this way, canal infrastructure adds a distinct focus alongside religious and seigneurial architecture.
A small path across private land leads to the Fontaine Saint Aignan. The owners have permitted access; confirm the access arrangements locally before your visit.
