Historic religious buildings and marked trails offer two distinct themes for planning a trip to Sulniac. The churches and chapels draw attention to architectural styles, materials and dates; the trails are marked for walking, horse riding and mountain biking. Sulniac lies on the first foothills of the Landes de Lanvaux.

Churches, Chapels and Architecture

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Gorvello was built mainly in the 16th century. Its floor plan is T-shaped, and its architectural details are made of granite. The T-shaped floor plan describes the overall shape, while the granite details refer to individual architectural features. The church is protected as a historic monument under a registration order dated 15 June 1925. The construction period and the date of protection are two different points in time: one dates the building’s construction, the other its registration as a monument.

The Chapelle Sainte-Marguerite also dates from the 16th century and was built of granite. Its wooden vault is painted blue and studded with stars in the style of the 17th century. Here, the 17th century refers to the style of the star ornamentation, not to the construction date of the chapel. The rustic altar and altarpiece complex includes rectangular panels with moulded edges, flat pilasters and baskets of flowers. An altarpiece is the decorated structure behind an altar. A statue stands in the central niche; the ensemble depicts the Virgin and Child, Margaret fighting the dragon, Saint Matthew and a guardian angel.

The Oratoire Saint Vincent Ferrier in Sulniac dates from the 17th century, while the Chapelle Saint-Roch dates from the 16th century. The well-preserved village of Le Gorvello gives an impression of what Morbihan may have looked like in the 17th century. The 17th century is thus mentioned both as the specific construction period of the oratory and as a possible historical reference for the village.

Marked Trails and Sunken Lanes

Sulniac has marked trails for walking, horse riding and mountain biking. Choosing how to get around is a practical starting point for planning a route. As trail conditions can change, check the relevant conditions before setting out on a specific route.

The Circuit de Sainte Marguerite starts at the Chapelle Sainte Marguerite. Sunken lanes are a distinctive feature of the region; in the past, an extensive network connected villages, farms and market towns.

Apple Festival in October

Sulniac’s apple festival takes place on the second Sunday in October, adding a specific date in the annual calendar to the history of the buildings. Autumn events include traditional crafts, arts and crafts, and gastronomy; programme details may vary from year to year. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the date and programme for the relevant year.
