Megalithism in Morbihan bears witness to more than 2,000 years of human activity. The UNESCO-listed Mégalithes de Carnac et des rives du Morbihan site comprises dense Neolithic structures dating from approximately 5000 to 2300 BC. The landscape also displays many different facets: dunes, marshland, heathland and peat bogs are part of the picture, as are forests and ponds.

Megalithic culture and historic estates

Those wishing to discover the region’s history will encounter historic estates as well as its stone monuments. The Domaine de Suscinio on the Rhuys Peninsula was once a hunting residence of the Dukes of Brittany. Visits and activities are offered there year-round; opening arrangements and the programme may change. Check these details before your visit if you are planning a stay there.

The Domaine de Kerguéhennec combines a natural area with 18th-century architecture and contemporary art. The estate includes a sculpture park, heritage collections and walking paths through the landscaped park. The combination of art, architectural history and parkland offers a different way to explore heritage than the megalithic sites. Access to individual buildings and exhibitions may change.

The department’s collections also take different forms: they may be displayed publicly, entrusted to museums or kept in storage. The Morbihan Pierre-Tal-Coat collection comprises more than 60 paintings and nearly 1,200 prints and drawings. It may grow through further acquisitions and donations. Heritage guides offer free activities on site or to take away; the specific formats may change. Guided visits to exhibitions, archaeological excavation sites and nearby heritage sites complement the programme. Dates and participating locations may vary.

Discover nature on foot and on the water

The Espaces Naturels Sensibles network includes 103 sites and 3,360 hectares of protected natural areas. An interactive map helps you find accessible natural sites in the department. Weather-appropriate hiking gear is recommended for walks in nature; access and equipment recommendations may vary depending on the season and weather.

The annual Morbihan Grandeur Nature programme brings together activities at various natural sites. Depending on the year’s edition, these may include walks, bike rides, storytelling walks, family games, and daytime or nighttime visits. The activities and dates on offer change from year to year. In the Gulf of Morbihan Regional Nature Park, nature activities on foot, by bike, on horseback, and on and in the water are supported. This offers different ways to explore, without creating a single set itinerary for visitors.

Local discoveries and practical information

Cider-making is another facet of Morbihan. La Maison du cidre in Le Hézo presents the methods of a family that practised the craft over three generations. Check the opening arrangements before your visit.

For getting around the department, the regional Breizh-Go bus network lists 15 routes crossing Morbihan. The number of routes and their itineraries may change, so check your connection for the day of travel. The Treh Simon maritime shuttle carries bicycles between Étel and Plouhinec. It operates seasonally, so it is worth checking the timetable before travelling.

When planning your trip, it is worth considering its themes together: megalithic monuments, historic estates and natural areas offer different perspectives on Morbihan. Information about seasons, changing programmes and access can help you choose suitable stops and check details before your visit.
