Saint-Tugdual combines cultural history with carriage rides and the half-day Saint Guen carriage ride circuit. Saint-Guen Chapel dates from 1540, while the present-day Saint-Tugdual Church dates from 1962. The cross from the former cemetery and the Manoir de Kerminizy add to these historic points of interest.

Chapel and church: different dates

At Saint-Guen Chapel, the construction date and protected status are easy to distinguish: it was built in 1540; the chapel and its ossuary were listed as historic monuments by decree on 5 July 1927. The two dates answer different questions: 1540 marks the chapel’s construction, while the decree records the protection of both buildings. An ossuary is a bone house; the term refers to a different type of building from a chapel.

The present-day Saint-Tugdual Church dates from 1962. Together with the chapel’s construction date, this creates a contrast between a 16th-century building and the present-day church from the 20th century.

The cross from the former cemetery

One distinctive detail is the cross from the former cemetery, which stands near Saint-Tugdual Church. Its four sides feature sculpted scenes from the life of Christ: the baptism, the arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, the scourging and the carrying of the cross. The four motifs give the cross a clearly readable visual narrative; rather than simply taking in the monument’s shape, culturally minded travellers can compare the episodes depicted. The cross closely resembles the Calvary at Locuon in Ploërdut. This direct comparison offers another point of reference for understanding the cross.

Carriage rides by appointment

Attelages de Tro Coët regularly offers carriage rides in Saint-Tugdual; rides are available by appointment. Arrange to get in touch in advance if you want a carriage ride to be part of your stay. The Saint Guen carriage ride circuit is a half-day tour. It starts either at Saint Guen Chapel or at Attelages du Tro Coët. If you start at Attelages du Tro Coët, let them know in advance. Allow half a day for this circuit.

Routes through woodland and sunken lanes

The Circuit de Saint-Guen follows wooded paths; the Saint Guen carriage ride circuit runs along sunken lanes. Sunken lanes are paths cut into the surrounding terrain. This distinguishes two features of the routes: woodland describes the surroundings, while a sunken lane describes the shape of the route. For the carriage ride, the half-day duration is another factor to consider when planning.

Manoir de Kerminizy

The Manoir de Kerminizy was built in the 16th century and is visible from the road. Events are held at the manor, including ones organised by local associations, such as walks and classic car gatherings. If a specific event date matters for your travel plans, check it in advance.
