Rohan brings together the architectural history of its churches and chapels with traces of the former canal trade. The canal also shapes a present-day aspect of the town: cycle tourism and leisure boating. When planning your trip, you can focus on the historic buildings or the towpath—or consider both perspectives side by side. This lets you organise your stay around the themes that interest you most, without committing to a set itinerary.

Churches with layers from different periods

The parish church dedicated to Saint Gobrien was moved and rebuilt in 1897. Saint-Samson Church was rebuilt in 1904 on the foundations of a 15th-century parish church. The octagonal baptismal font dates from this earlier period. A 16th-century choir window depicts the Crucifixion and bears the coats of arms of Brittany, the de Rohan family, and the Le Moyne de Talhouët, Bréhaut and Clisson d’Arradon families. Saint-Samson therefore brings together three periods: the 15th-century parish church, the 16th-century window and the 1904 reconstruction.

Chapels and their links to castles

The chapels also offer a historical perspective. Notre-Dame de Bonne-Encontre Chapel has been listed as a Monument historique since 1922. Jean II de Rohan had it built to replace the chapel of the first castle, dating from 1104. Saint-Martin Chapel was built in 1127 by monks from Marmoutier Abbey, at the initiative of Alain de Rohan, beside his new castle. Notre-Dame therefore replaced an earlier castle chapel, while Saint-Martin was built beside a new castle. This difference gives each building its own historical connection.

The Halle aux grains and the weekly market

The Halle aux grains dates from the last quarter of the 17th century and is one of the last five surviving examples of historic wooden market halls in historic Brittany. Its historical significance is paired with a regular function: a weekly market featuring regional produce is held there every Sunday morning. If you would like to include the market in your travel plans, you can set aside Sunday morning for it.

Products from Rohan

The range at Rohan’s producers’ market includes, among other things, meat and charcuterie, fish, saucissons, couscous, farm produce, crêpes, goat’s cheese and oysters. The selection spans both savoury products and foods suited to a snack. Together with the weekly market at the Halle aux grains, the markets offer a glimpse of different aspects of the local food scene.

Canal heritage and activities along the towpath

Traces of the former canal trade can be seen at Quai Notre-Dame, at the grain storehouse at Pont d’Oust, and along the quays and warehouses of Saint-Samson. In Rohan, commercial shipping on the canal has given way to green tourism and tourism involving stays in different places. Every year, the canal attracts numerous cycle tourists and leisure boaters. This connects the canal’s historical role with its present-day use.

One specific cycling option is the Pontivy–Rohan stage: it covers 54 locks over 25 kilometres. Along the stage, you can walk or cycle on the towpath and take breaks for picnics and relaxation. The number of locks and the distance describe the cycling stage; the towpath also offers the option of travelling on foot. You can take these different perspectives into account when planning, without making the entire stay a cycling trip.

Practical information

If you are travelling in an electric vehicle, there is a public charging station in Rohan in the petrol station car park. You can include it as a specific point in your travel planning. Alongside the cultural and canal-related themes, it offers a range of different ways to shape your stay: historic buildings, regional markets or activities on the towpath.
