Plouhinec has 8 kilometres of sandy beach and grey dunes with a wild character. The Ria d’Étel adds a different landscape: it is an estuary formed by the mouth of the Étel, lying between Plouhinec and Etel. When planning your trip, you can choose between the beach and dunes on one side and a river-shaped estuary landscape on the other. The Natura 2000 site “Ria d’Étel” encompasses the entire water area of the ria and notable terrestrial areas.

The Ria and its distinctive waterside spots

At the entrance to the ria lies Île du Nohic, the first rocky island there. It is on the right bank and within the municipality of Plouhinec. The picturesque Port du Magouër is a fishing and leisure harbour overlooking the Ria d’Étel. The two spots offer contrasting highlights: a rocky island at the entrance to the estuary and a harbour that combines fishing and leisure activities.

Archaeology and a structure dating from 1960

At the Mané Véchen archaeological site, you can see the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa built towards the end of the 2nd century AD. Excavations uncovered a sculpture depicting Ariadne and Dionysus. The Sémaphore de la Barre d’Etel marks a much later period: it was built in 1960 and is the last civilian semaphore in France. Two very different periods are represented side by side: a villa from Roman antiquity and a structure from the 20th century.

Hiking and water sports

The hiking trails in Plouhinec offer views of the Atlantic Ocean and Quiberon Bay, and pass through wooded landscapes, secluded coves and picturesque villages. This means that in addition to sea views, the routes also take you through forests, coves and villages. The intercommunal tourist information office provides a topoguide with 19 hiking routes in its area. As availability may change, check with them in advance to see if the guide is available.

Stand-up paddleboarding is possible on the Ria d’Étel and along the coast. ESF Plouhinec offers surfing for ages six and up; equipment is provided, and the activity is open to everyone. If you are choosing between the two water sports, one difference is particularly clear: surfing equipment is provided, and the activity is available from age six; stand-up paddleboarding is possible on the ria and along the coast. Instructor availability and timetables may vary by season. Check the current lesson times in advance.

Shellfish gathering at low tide

At low tide, you can gather Venus clams, whelks and other shellfish on the beaches and rocks of Plouhinec. This activity depends on the tide: check the latest tide information and shellfish regulations before gathering.
