Melrand offers several different starting points for a cultural and nature getaway: chapel art, protected historic sites, the Village de l’An Mil and the Kerstraquel pond. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between events with set dates and visits possible all year round. The Village de l’An Mil can be visited year-round for an admission fee; check the current opening hours before you travel. The summer art programme has dates that vary from year to year.

Chapels and Protected Heritage

The Chapelle Saint-Fiacre was built around 1460 in the Flamboyant Gothic style and is protected as a historic monument. It preserves remnants of a mural depicting the life of Saint Fiacre. It also has one of the four remarkable rood screens in Brittany. The construction period, mural and rood screen each give the site its own historical significance, without reducing its history to a single period.

The Chapelle de Locmaria and the Tumulus de Saint-Fiacre in Melrand are also protected as historic monuments. Another chapel, Le Guelhouit, was built in 1683. Its setting is shaped by the landscape: it lies in the Sarre valley at the foot of a hill. Melrand thus brings together different forms of heritage—chapels from different periods and a tumulus, each with its own context.

Contemporary Art in Summer

L’Art dans les Chapelles has taken place every summer since 1992. From mid-July to mid-September, the programme presents a contemporary artwork in protected historic chapels; since 2020, the Chapelle Saint-Fiacre has been the venue. Free, self-guided visits are available. Beyond the exhibition period, the programme includes year-round artist residencies, exhibitions outside the venues, meetings and workshops.

If the art presentation is an important part of your trip, the specific dates for the year matter: the period and participating chapels may vary depending on the programme. Check the dates for your visit in advance. The art event and the historic features of Saint-Fiacre complement one another, but are separate reasons to take an interest in the chapel.

Village de l’An Mil and Walking Route

The Village de l’An Mil features around a hundred plant species, traditional animal breeds and historical re-enactments. The site comprises 17 buildings, ten of which have been excavated so far. These figures convey two aspects of the site: visitors can enjoy a varied offering of nature and history, while the excavation figures show that not all the buildings mentioned have been uncovered. Visits are possible year-round for an admission fee. As opening hours should be checked before travelling, it is advisable to consult the latest visitor information.

The Circuit du Village de l’An Mil is a moderately difficult, five-kilometre circular walk. Its estimated duration is about one hour and 15 minutes, and the starting point is Place de l’Église in Melrand. This makes it possible to plan the walk differently from a visit whose duration depends on opening hours and your own pace on site. The stated walking time is an estimate, not an exact requirement.

Kerstraquel Pond

Kerstraquel Pond covers two hectares. There are opportunities for fishing, as well as paths, a picnic area, a playground and toilets. The paths are accessible to people with reduced mobility. As facilities may change or be temporarily unavailable, it is a good idea to check their status before your visit.

The fish population is another feature of the pond: it has a high density of coarse fish, such as pike and perch. Rainbow trout are also stocked several times during the season. Stocking takes place seasonally, so anyone planning to fish should bear the timing of their visit in mind. The attractions in Melrand therefore offer clear contrasts: the chapels and art provide cultural highlights, the walking route offers a set distance, and the pond centres on water, fishing and its available facilities.
