Le Guerno offers visitors a variety of interests for a stay: the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and historic fountains draw attention to architectural history, while the Circuit des Hospitaliers offers a circular hike and La Zone des Lots places a wetland at the heart of the experience. The Parc animalier et botanique de Branféré adds animals and botany to the mix; it is located in the commune of Le Guerno. Culture, hiking, landscapes, and wildlife and plant life are thus presented as distinct interests.

Church and Fountain Architecture

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, also known as Sainte-Anne, was classified as a historic monument on October 27, 1971. Its south façade features an external pulpit, a distinctive detail of the church’s architecture. A pilgrimage associated with the church probably dates back to the 12th century. This building therefore brings together a precisely dated monument status and a much earlier, though only probable, historical dating of the pilgrimage.

The fountains also display distinct architectural features. Fontaine Sainte-Anne was added to the supplementary list of historic monuments in 1925. It is an elegant fountain with a capital-like top supported by columns. Fontaine Sainte-Marie is a granite structure dating from 1787; its design includes three arches and a solid wall with a niche and a statue. By comparison, the column-supported top is the focal point at Sainte-Anne, while Sainte-Marie is defined by its arches and wall.

Le Calvaire has been on the supplementary list of historic monuments since 1925. The dates associated with these cultural landmarks refer to different things: 1787 is the construction date of Fontaine Sainte-Marie; 1925 marks the listings of Fontaine Sainte-Anne and Le Calvaire, while 1971 is the church’s classification date. For historical context, it is helpful to distinguish the construction date from the monument status.

Hiking and Wetland

The Circuit des Hospitaliers is a 10 km circular route of moderate difficulty, with an elevation gain of 118 m. It starts in the centre of Le Guerno and shares some sections with the GR 349 Rhuys-Vilaine. Its distance, difficulty, and elevation gain provide concrete points of reference for comparing the route with your own hiking plans.

La Zone des Lots is a natural area classified as a wetland. A 2 km hike from a car park leads to the heart of the natural area. Compared with the 10 km Circuit, the stated distance is shorter, but the routes differ in format: the Circuit is a loop, while the hike leads to the heart of the wetland. When choosing, both the route length and its described format and destination therefore matter.

Accessibility

La Zone des Lots is accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Branféré in Le Guerno

The Parc animalier de Branféré is located in the commune of Le Guerno, in the French department of Morbihan in Brittany. More than 195 animal species live in semi-freedom, in conditions close to their natural habitat, in the preserved botanical garden of the Parc animalier et botanique de Branféré. The number of species may change over time. Wildlife and botany are thus two aspects of the park’s focus.
