La Roche-Bernard can be explored through its historic districts and the Vilaine: at the Site du Rocher, the river, bridges and marina are all in view. The Chapelle Notre-Dame, old districts and activities at the harbour give the town further facets. When planning your visit, you can choose between culture, views and activities on the water.

Experience the history

In 1561, the Chapelle Notre-Dame became the first Protestant temple in Brittany. The present building dates from the 16th century and was fully restored in the 19th century and again in the 1980s. Today, the chapel hosts temporary exhibitions and concerts; the programme may vary.

The Parcours découverte is a themed walking route about the history of La Roche-Bernard. It takes 1.5 hours and includes around ten wrought-iron information panels. The Bern’Hart tourist train offers a shorter option: its narrated tour covers 7 kilometres and takes 40 minutes. Along the way, visitors learn about the history of the town and the Vilaine. The Bern’Hart route passes the rear harbour, the old districts, the town centre and the suspension bridge, and offers a panorama of the river. As details of tourist services may change seasonally, check the timetable before your trip.

Old districts, crafts and architecture

Most buildings in the old districts date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The districts are home to workshops run by potters, ceramicists, makers of artistic glass beads, stained-glass artists, glass-thread artists and sculptors. If you have a particular workshop in mind, check in advance whether and when visits are possible.

The town’s history is also reflected in its cuisine: the Crêperie de La Roche serves crêpes and galettes in a half-timbered house dating from the 15th century. As business details may change, it is worth checking the latest information if you are planning a visit.

The Musée de la Vilaine maritime is housed in a building dating from the 16th to 17th centuries, built directly into the rock over five levels. Check accessibility before visiting. Two cannons recovered from the warship Le Juste in 1981 stand on the Quai de la Douane. The Flottille Traditionnelle de Basse Vilaine is also part of the area’s maritime history: it is considered the largest concentration of traditional sailing boats in Brittany; some boats carry the Bateau d’Intérêt Patrimonial label.

The Vilaine, bridges and views

The Site du Rocher offers views of the Vilaine, its bridges and the marina. You can reach it from the old harbour via the riverside promenade. The Circuit des Ponts offers a different perspective: the route crosses several bridges, provides panoramic views of the Vilaine and allows you to explore the historic centre. Some sections follow the long-distance hiking trails GR 39 and GR 349.

On the water and in the events calendar

From the harbour of La Roche-Bernard, you can canoe, kayak or go stand-up paddleboarding on the Vilaine. Les Vedettes Jaunes rents out licence-free electric boats in La Roche-Bernard for trips on the river; the boats can accommodate five to eight people. You can also travel from La Roche-Bernard to Arzal with Les Vedettes Jaunes. Availability and timetables may change; check the details when making your plans.

Every summer, La Roche-Bernard hosts the free Garennes music festival; the specific programme may vary. Musical events, theatre performances, markets, concerts, dances and Fest Noz take place on the Place du Bouffay. Individual dates may also change.
