In Josselin, a historic estate open to visitors, sacred architecture, and experiences along the Nantes–Brest Canal come together. You can choose different focuses for your stay: the architectural history of the Château, its gardens, the heritage of the Sainte-Croix district, or time by the water. The Château de Josselin offers a vivid view of different architectural periods. Its medieval remains are complemented by furnished interiors restored in the late 19th century.

The Château de Josselin and its gardens

Three defensive towers of the Château rise above the Nantes–Brest Canal, creating a striking relationship between the estate’s medieval architecture and the canal. If you are interested in historic architectural styles, you can admire the towers and explore the interiors during your visit. The rooms are furnished; they were restored in the late 19th century.

The estate also includes a landscaped garden of more than three hectares. It features a rose garden with 40 varieties, a formal French garden, and an English park crossed by a stream. The different garden types each have their own character: the French garden, rose garden, and stream-lined park are not simply repetitions of the same design. Together with the château rooms, the grounds offer a different perspective on the estate than the defensive towers above the canal.

Basilica, half-timbering, and history

The Basilica of Notre-Dame du Roncier is a church in the Flamboyant Gothic style. It houses recumbent effigies of Olivier de Clisson and his wife, as well as stained-glass windows. The large organs are another notable feature: they were restored in 1990 and overhauled in the winter of 2010/2011. Historically, the basilica developed into a pilgrimage site for people seeking healing. Its architecture, furnishings, and religious significance offer different ways to explore the history of the place.

The Sainte-Croix district is as old as Josselin Castle. It has noteworthy examples of half-timbered houses; the chapel of the former priory is also among its historic buildings. It dates from the 11th and 13th centuries. Another building in Josselin is the house dating from 1538, with caryatids and carved beams depicting hunting scenes. These details let you compare different forms of historic architecture: half-timbering, a chapel spanning several centuries, and a house adorned with figurative carvings.

The bell tower and the Nantes–Brest Canal

You can climb more than a hundred steps to the basilica’s bell tower, which offers a view of the medieval town of Josselin. The number of steps can help you decide whether to include this activity in your plans. As access arrangements may vary, it is best to check before your visit.

The towpath along the Nantes–Brest Canal in Josselin invites you to take a walk by the water. The adjoining green spaces have picnic tables and deck chairs. This offers a different way to spend time by the canal than looking out at the water from the château. Ti War An Dour rents electric boats for trips along the sections of the canal on either side of the Josselin lock. Seasonal operations may vary, so check in advance whether rentals are available during your visit.

You can choose from several distinct activities: historic interiors and gardens, church and house architecture, the view from the bell tower, or time by the water on foot or in an electric boat. Decide what to focus on based on which of these aspects interests you most; there is no need to fit them all into a fixed itinerary.
