Explore Guer through several distinct cultural themes: the Musée du Souvenir, the Chapelle Saint-Étienne, art exhibitions and heritage walking tours each offer a different focus. The time required varies too—from about an hour to explore the town centre to longer walks with several stops. When planning your stay, you can consider your cultural interests alongside the time you have available.

Museum and Military History

The Musée du Souvenir at the Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan schools in Guer is a publicly accessible site dedicated to remembrance and military history. Its collection includes paintings, bronzes, weapons, uniforms, emblems and trophies. This combination brings together fine art, military equipment and symbols of remembrance, giving the museum a clear thematic focus. Check the current access arrangements before visiting.

Military history can also be seen beyond the collection, in the form of monuments. Visitors can see numerous military history monuments, steles, busts and statues in the built-up area of Camp de Coëtquidan and in the southern part of the training ground. Access to the Académie Militaire Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan is regulated; visitors must register at the Bellevue entrance post. Bear this requirement in mind if you plan to visit the Académie.

Chapelle Saint-Étienne and Other Cultural Sites

At the site of Saint-Etienne, west of Guer, the Prieuré Saint-Étienne and the Chapelle Saint-Étienne have been classified as historic monuments since 1971. The Chapelle is considered the oldest chapel in Morbihan and dates from the 10th century. Its exceptional brick decoration on the eastern gable, from the same period, is considered unique in Brittany. Its age, protected status and distinctive design make the chapel a notable focus for a cultural and historical stay.

A permanent exhibition of paintings by local artist Adelyne Neveux has been on display at Guer town hall since 3 June 2025. It can be visited by appointment during town hall opening hours; confirm your appointment in advance. This exhibition is a separate option alongside the historic sites, but requires prior arrangements.

The “L’Art des Mardis de La Gare” exhibition takes place at the Chapelle St-Thomas and features local artists. It is part of a recurring summer programme. The Centre Culturel Le Belvédère in Guer offers exhibitions, performances and artist residencies. If you plan to visit on a particular date, check the relevant programme: these cultural offerings differ both in format and timing.

Walking Tours and Planning Your Time

The Baludik walking tour “A la découverte de Guer: histoire et patrimoine” takes you through the centre of Guer. It is just under a kilometre long and takes about an hour. So when planning, consider the stated duration of the walk as well as its short distance.

For longer explorations, there are two interactive heritage walks: the route to the Chapelle de Prado is 9.3 kilometres long, takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and has 9 stops. The walk to the Prieuré Saint-Étienne is 7.7 kilometres long, is listed as taking about 2 hours and 15 minutes, and has 5 stops. By comparison, the Prado route is 1.6 kilometres longer, takes about half an hour more and has four additional stops. These details can help you choose between the two routes, which differ in distance and time required. Route details may change; check them before setting out.

As a longer route option, the Voie Verte runs for 12 kilometres through the Pays de Guer and forms part of a 47-kilometre route between Guipry-Messac and Ploërmel. Check local trail conditions when planning. For a break in the town centre, Square Bandon offers green spaces, a water feature and a playground for young children. As facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest information in advance.
