In Gourin, cultural history and trails through a striking landscape come together. Every year, the Brittany championships of traditional music and dance are held here. Historic buildings tell the story of different eras, while trails explore the Parc de Tronjoly and the surrounding Montagnes Noires. Whether you are mainly interested in architecture, music and dance, or routes on foot, by bike or on horseback, these themes offer different ways to shape your stay.
Culture and architecture in Gourin
The Château de Tronjoly is an elegant 18th-century manor house. The Domaine de Tronjoly hosts large public and private events, as well as various exhibitions in summer. The programme may vary. If you are planning to visit Gourin for a particular exhibition or event, check the dates in advance.
The chapels also reflect different phases of construction. The Chapelle Saint-Nicolas was built between 1500 and 1550 and is considered the tallest and most richly sculpted chapel in the Pays de Gourin. The Chapelle Saint-Hervé was built between 1518 and 1536 and is regarded as an example of Breton Renaissance architecture. The Chapelle Notre-Dame des Victoires has several centuries between its construction phases: it was built in 1509 and rebuilt and extended in 1830. The dates help distinguish the building histories of the three chapels.
Another cultural landmark is the replica of the Statue of Liberty in Gourin. It commemorates the emigration of Gourin residents to America. Along with the chapels and the manor house, it offers another perspective on the town’s history: here, the focus is on the memory of emigration as well as on architectural styles and historical dates.
Tronjoly Park
The park of the Château de Tronjoly is free to enter year-round. Designed paths and several trails wind through the Parc de Tronjoly, where bridges span picturesque streams. This gives you clear points of reference for a walk in the park without requiring you to follow a set route. When planning your visit, you can choose based on your interest in park trails and the landscape.
The Parc de Tronjoly also has an open-air theatre just a few steps from the château. The park, its paths and the theatre offer different ways to explore the grounds: the trails lead through the park, while the theatre is another named destination there. The fact that the park is free to enter year-round is useful information when planning a visit.
Trails and landscape
The Montagnes Noires rise above Gourin. The GR 38 runs along the southern slopes of this range between Gourin and Le Faouët. If you are interested in a route, you will find a clearly named connection between two places, set in an equally clearly described landscape. The route can be distinguished from other trails in and around Gourin by its endpoints and course.
The Voie verte No. 7 offers a different choice of ways to get around: it can be used on foot, by bike or on horseback. The non-motorised section between Gourin and Guiscriff is 19 kilometres long. Both named places and the length of this section are useful for orientation; the figure refers to this stretch, not to the entire Voie verte.
The Circuit des carrières adds a historical dimension to the landscape. It passes visible traces of former slate quarries. Unlike the Voie verte, the focus here is not on the stated ways of using the route, but on the visible evidence of past slate quarrying.
The routes are distinguished by the features described for each one: the GR 38 is defined by the connection between Gourin and Le Faouët and its location on the southern slopes of the Montagnes Noires; for the Voie verte, the key details are the 19 kilometres between Gourin and Guiscriff and the three stated ways of using it; the Circuit des carrières draws attention to former slate quarries. To choose between them, you can first decide whether the connection between places, the choice of how to travel or the history of the landscape matters most to you.
