Discover Cruguel through both its architectural history and the landscapes along its routes. The Fontaine de Saint-Brieuc, the parish church and the Chapelle Saint-Yves tell different stories; the Circuit des Picouras focuses instead on hedgerows, meadows, woodland and the valley of the Chesnaie. Cruguel has held the “Commune du Patrimoine Rural de Bretagne” label since 2007; it was renewed in 2016. Buildings, protection dates and route lengths offer different ways to plan your stay around culture or landscape.

Architectural history with clear dates

The parish church of Saint-Brieuc was built between 1874 and 1902 to replace the earlier church. The Fontaine de Saint-Brieuc, with its washing and bathing pool, was once part of that demolished parish church and has been listed as a historic monument since 29 March 1935. The spring and the later church therefore have a specific historical connection: the Fontaine belonged to the earlier building, while the present parish church dates from 1874 to 1902.

The Chapelle Saint-Yves dates largely from the second half of the 17th century and was partially rebuilt in 1852. The chapel grounds were protected on 24 September 1934. These dates refer to two different things: 1852 marks the partial reconstruction, while 1934 marks the protection of the grounds. Those interested in historic buildings can therefore explore Cruguel’s building phases and protection history side by side, without compressing them into a single timeline.

Manor houses, a mill and a heritage walk

A manor house dating from 1636 stands at the corner of Rue Saint-Brieuc and Rue des Vieux Métiers. Its round-arched entrance is on the ground floor, with a dormer window topped by a triangular pediment above. A wooden cornice with brackets completes the façade. These architectural details draw the eye from the entrance up to the roof opening and the upper edge of the façade. Another old manor house on Place du Souvenir dates from 1645 and is part of Cruguel’s rural heritage.

The Moulin des Timbrieux is also one of the village’s distinctive heritage features. The windmill stands on private land and is one of the few windmills remaining in the canton. It has been restored, and part of its transmission mechanism has been preserved. Bear in mind that it stands on private land when planning your visit. No tour or access is promised.

A heritage walk takes you through Cruguel to several notable homes in the village centre and introduces local legends and personalities. The brochure is the guide to this walk; check whether it is available before travelling.

Routes through hedgerows, meadows and a stream valley

The 7 km Circuit des Picouras passes through hedgerows, meadows and woodland, following the valley of the stream La Chesnaie. The route focuses above all on the changing landscape.

Another option is cycle route No. 11, “La vallée du Sedon,” which is 16 km long. The two distances give you a sense of their different lengths: the Circuit des Picouras is 7 km, while the cycle route is 16 km. Check the cycle route details before setting off. This lets you choose based on your preferred activity and distance, without treating the two routes as one continuous itinerary.

Farm-gate sales by appointment

Foie gras de Cruguel is sold directly from the farm throughout the year, but only by appointment. Arrange a time before your visit. This is described as farm-gate sales; tastings, tours and workshops are not listed among the available visitor activities.

When choosing a holiday rental in Cruguel, these different interests can help guide you: architectural history and architecture, a walk featuring local legends, or a route through the landscape. If farm-gate sales are part of your plans, remember to make an appointment. This way, you can decide in advance which of the documented attractions matters most for your stay.
