Calan combines ecclesiastical heritage with a landscape of fields, meadows and heathland. The Eglise de la Trinité represents building phases from the 11th and 12th centuries and Romanesque painting fragments from this period. The Circuit du Lec’h runs alongside streams and through wetlands, sunken lanes and villages. This gives you architectural history and hiking as distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.

Church and Romanesque imagery

The nave, crossing and north wall of the choir of the Eglise paroissiale de la Trinité were built in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Eglise de la Trinité also preserves fragments of Romanesque wall paintings from the 11th or 12th century. They depict the Last Supper and Hell. These named architectural features and pictorial subjects offer different ways to explore Calan’s ecclesiastical heritage.

A gallery at the Eglise de la Trinité connects the south portal to an ossuary. It was built in the 16th century and is described as unique in Morbihan. It therefore dates from later than the aforementioned parts of the nave and choir. The Eglise de Calan is listed as a historic monument.

Other traces of cultural heritage

Calan’s architectural heritage also includes bread ovens. At the Puits de la Trinité, a tentative date and a specific registration date go together: the well is believed to date from the 17th century and has been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 1934.

The Fontaine de Kerandiot preserves a traditional installation around a village spring with a basin. This was probably used as a washing place and possibly as a watering trough for livestock. Kerandiot is also associated with three lec’hs. Calan’s cultural themes thus range from church architecture and wall paintings to fountains and megalithic heritage.

Landscape and hiking

Calan covers 1,227 hectares and consists mainly of fields, meadows and heathland. This landscape offers a different focus from the buildings and historic sites. Calan has 20 kilometres of hiking trails, making hiking another part of its local character.

The Circuit du Lec’h is an easy 8.4-kilometre hiking trail. In Calan, it runs alongside streams and through wetlands, sunken lanes and villages. The route description was updated on 12 May 2026.

The figures of 8.4 and 20 kilometres answer different questions: the shorter distance refers to the Circuit du Lec’h, while the other figure is the total length of the hiking trails in Calan. When choosing a particular trail, the Circuit’s easy rating is also a separate consideration alongside its length.

Choose Calan as your destination

Its proximity to the Lorient–Roscoff route makes Calan easy to reach. When choosing where to stay, you can focus on church and architectural history or on the Circuit du Lec’h. Both themes give your planning a clear direction: you can explore specific cultural details or take a named hiking trail of a stated length.
