Explore Arzal by trail and water: a botanical loop passes through a variety of landscapes, while other routes draw attention to mills or the Vilaine estuary. At the Barrage d’Arzal, technical infrastructure and activities for visitors come together by the water; there is also a harbour, sightseeing cruises and traces of the area’s history. This gives you a choice of walking routes, scenery and experiences around the river and estuary during your stay.

Walking trails through varied landscapes

The Cosca botanical loop is 2.5 kilometres long and passes through a sunken lane, an orchard, heathland, a marsh, former salt marshes and a forest. Along the way, wooded and wetland areas alternate with other types of landscape. The route’s diversity lies in the way these sections sit alongside one another, rather than in a single landscape feature.

For longer walks, choose from routes with different highlights. The Circuit des Coteaux de Vilaine is just over 8 kilometres long and runs from Lantiern to the Vilaine, passing mills on the slopes. The Circuit de l’Estuaire is 10.5 kilometres long, loops around Bourgerelle and passes through Moustoir, offering a remarkable panorama of the Vilaine estuary. When choosing, you can take into account both the route length and the contrasting highlights of mills on the slopes and views over the estuary.

Arzal also has three connected walking trails. Along them, you can discover mills, bread ovens, crosses, fountains and thatched cottages, as well as varied landscapes. The trail network combines cultural landmarks with experiences in nature. Another route crosses the commune in two loops starting from Lantiern. It is 33 kilometres long; the western loop is 18.5 kilometres, and the eastern loop is 14 kilometres.

The Vilaine, the estuary and boating

The Barrage d’Arzal is about 500 metres long and has five gates. Its lock connects the river to the sea. At the barrage, you can watch boats pass through the lock, walk by the water and observe fish migration. The site offers a chance to appreciate both the structure and the activities on the water.

The Port d’Arzal-Camoël provides access to boating on the Vilaine in both fresh water and at sea. From Arzal, Les Vedettes Jaunes offer sightseeing cruises on the Vilaine. If you plan to include a cruise in your stay, check the schedule and route in advance, as both may change. The estuary’s banks at Arzal offer beautiful views; the light at sunrise and sunset is particularly striking.

Mills and historical connections

The Moulin de Séréac was built in 1653 as a windmill for producing flour and remained in operation until 1950. A chapel has been listed as a historic monument since 16 June 1964. These offer different connections to the area’s history: the former use of a mill and the chapel’s protected status.

When planning your stay around your interests, you can choose between landscapes, historic structures and experiences on the water. The Cosca loop takes in several types of landscape on a shorter route; the longer routes offer different highlights. At the barrage, you can also watch boats pass through the lock and observe fish migration, while sightseeing cruises offer another way to experience the Vilaine. This gives you several ways to spend your time in Arzal, without having to combine every activity into a single tour.
