Broons offers two distinct highlights for a stay: the history surrounding Bertrand Du Guesclin and the La Planchette leisure complex, with walking trails and a swimming pool. For orientation, it is useful to distinguish between the individual landmarks: the Colonne Du Guesclin is about 1 kilometre from Place Du Guesclin.

Du Guesclin and Broons’ architectural history

The Colonne Du Guesclin is a 10-metre-high granite monolith, erected in 1840. It stands at the edge of the former RN 12, making it a separate landmark from Place Du Guesclin. Bertrand Du Guesclin was born around 1320 at Château de la Motte-Broons. Broons cemetery is also home to the Chapelle de la Madeleine, which tradition attributes to Jeanne de Malemain, his mother. The connection to Du Guesclin is therefore reflected in his birthplace, the monument, and the traditional attribution.

The history of the church also spans several building phases. Broons’ former church dated from the 15th century and was demolished in 1894. It was replaced by a new Gothic Revival church, inaugurated in 1898. This places the development from the earlier church to its Gothic Revival successor in context, without treating the two buildings as one and the same structure.

Walking trails and swimming pool at La Planchette

For outdoor activities, the La Planchette leisure complex is a separate place to visit. It is located by the Étang de la Planchette on the Route de Plumaugat, and two walking trails can be explored from the complex. This makes walking trails another option to consider when planning, alongside the historic sites.

The Piscine de la Planchette has a 25-metre-long, 10-metre-wide swimming pool and a solarium. Check current access arrangements before your visit. A programme from September 2025 lists swimming lessons for children and adults to learn and improve their swimming skills, as well as year-round outdoor aqua fitness activities. Check the current programme details before your visit.

Market day and getting there

A fair is held in Broons on the first Wednesday of every month. It occupies Place Du Guesclin and the adjoining streets as far as the post office and Rue de la Gare. The Colonne Du Guesclin is about 1 kilometre from the square. If you want to time your trip to coincide with the market, check the date again before setting off.

For rail travel, the distance between the station and the town centre is a separate factor to consider when planning: the station is about 3 kilometres from the town centre. Broons is served by TER Bretagne trains, with connections towards Rennes and Saint-Brieuc. Check the timetables before travelling and take the station’s approximate distance into account when planning the rest of your journey.
