A 700-metre historic circuit runs through Sauvagnon and offers views of the Pyrenees. The signposted circular trails range from 3.4 to 8.6 kilometres; the 44-kilometre Tour du Luy de Béarn loop also passes through the village. These different trail lengths offer a first impression of how routes and local history can shape a stay in different ways.

Forest, Wildlife and Green Spaces in Sauvagnon

The municipal forest covers 102.6 hectares and lies right next to the village. Families and walkers use it year-round. Deer, wild boar, hares, rabbits, foxes and badgers live in the forest; thrushes, woodcocks and wood pigeons fly over the area as migratory birds. Wildlife sightings are seasonal. Parc Lechaud is home to remarkable oak trees and flowering trees, as well as a rose garden. Alongside the larger forest, visitors can also enjoy a variety of trees and garden scenery.

Village History and Views of the Pyrenees

The Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine features frescoes by Léonard Fortuné; two of its windows were made by the Mauméjean workshop. Notre Couvent dates back to the 14th century and was initially established as a lay abbey. The Chemin de l’Oratoire runs alongside the Couvent and features a figure of Bernadette Soubirous kneeling before the Virgin Mary. An oppidum in Sauvagnon is considered a Celtic monument; it probably dates back to the Iron Age.

The 700-metre Circuit de cœur historique de Sauvagnon is a route through the village with views of the Pyrenees. It is accessible on foot, by bicycle and with a pushchair, is free of charge, and can be walked year-round. In clear weather, the viewpoint known as the “Balcony of Sauvagnon” also offers views of Pic d’Ossau and almost the entire Pyrenean range.

Trails and Activities

The signposted circular trails in Sauvagnon are between 3.4 and 8.6 kilometres long and have no particular difficulties (as of January 2026). A longer loop is the 44-kilometre Tour du Luy de Béarn, which passes through Sauvagnon. For the Plan Local de Randonnées du Luy de Béarn, the municipality provides hiking maps, GPS tracks and mountain biking route maps for download. These materials may be updated; check the available downloads before setting out.

The village also offers municipal sports facilities. The Polysports facility is freely accessible and offers basketball, football, handball and tennis-ball. Four beach volleyball courts are open to everyone free of charge. The skatepark covers 800 square metres and includes ramps, pyramids, an inclined surface, a bowl and a dip. As access conditions for municipal facilities may change, check them before your visit.
