Almost 280 archaeological sites have been recorded in the département to date, mainly in the Aspe and Ossau valleys. Pyrenees-Atlantiques brings together Basque and Béarnais identities, Pyrenean agro-pastoral traditions, and Spanish and Atlantic influences. Its culture, landscapes and regional products offer different ways to experience this diverse destination.

Culture between the Basque Country and Béarn

The architectural range includes English villas with exotic influences, Art Deco buildings, Basque etxe houses and Béarnais architecture. Mountain villages on hillsides are also part of the département’s landscape. Visitor attractions include Château d’Abbadia, Hôtel du Palais, Château de Pau, Villa Arnaga and Château Urtubie. For those interested in historic fortified settlements, Bastides 64 highlights 15 bastides in Béarn and the Basque Country.

The pilgrimage heritage includes Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne, Porte Saint Jacques in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the Romanesque church of L’Hôpital-Saint-Blaise and Cathédrale Sainte-Marie d’Oloron. These four sites were listed in 1998 as part of the UNESCO site “Routes of Santiago de Compostela.” The archaeological heritage of Parc national des Pyrénées also includes Bious-Artigues, Anéou, Troumouse, Liantran and the Maspêtre site near Borce in the Vallée d’Aspe. Access to and interpretation of archaeological sites may be regulated.

Festivals and village celebrations showcase Basque and Béarnais languages, music, dances, traditional dress, bandas and folk groups; the details vary by event. Museums, Terra-Aventura treasure hunts and guided street-art tours in Bayonne add to the cultural offerings. Events and visitor activities may change, so check what is available in advance.

Trails through valleys and landscapes

The département’s Espaces naturels sensibles are intended to be open to the public for cultural, scientific or landscape interpretation. They are also intended to be places where visitors can discover natural wealth. Parc national des Pyrénées extends across six valleys in the départements of Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrénées. It is distinguished by its diverse natural, cultural and scenic sites, as well as its flora and fauna, including endemic species.

The marked Sentier de Camille is a 104-kilometre circular route divided into six stages. One stage passes by Refuge d’Arlet in the Vallée d’Aspe. From Gourette, a challenging circular hike takes in the lakes of Louesque, Uzious, Lavedan and Anglas in a full day of high-altitude walking. The routes differ considerably in their format: the 104 kilometres of the Camille route are spread over six stages, while the Gourette loop links four lakes in one day. Check mountain conditions before setting out, and also check access to Refuge d’Arlet when hiking the Camille route.

The Vélosud offers a different focus. Its route through the département covers 188 kilometres and follows the Gave de Pau and the Gaves réunis to the Adour. It begins with around ten kilometres through rural landscapes along the Gave de Pau, on paths shared by walkers and cyclists. On the Pau–Lourdes route, the bastide of Nay is included as a heritage stop. Possible access points for the Pau section include the A64, exit 10, and TER services; bicycles are permitted on the rail network. Before setting out, check transport regulations, road conditions and whether the relevant section of the route is available.

A branch of the Vélosud crosses a footbridge to the Base de loisirs de Baudreix. The route from the opposite bank and back is about 500 metres. The facility includes a picnic area, camping, swimming and a restaurant; details of recreational facilities may change. For water activities, Lac de Fabrèges offers stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating. These activities are seasonal and weather-dependent—check conditions before your visit.

Ossau-Iraty and regional products

Ossau-Iraty AOP is made from whole milk from three local sheep breeds: Manech Tête Noire, Manech Tête Rousse and Basco-Béarnaise. Its production area stretches from the Côte Basque to the Haut Béarn and includes, among others, Labourd, Basse Navarre, Soule, Béarn des gaves, Ossau, Aspe and Barétous. The Route du Fromage Ossau-Iraty connects 129 stops in the Basque Country and Béarn and can be explored by car, bicycle or on foot. Visits to individual producers and their opening hours may vary. The route offers a different perspective on the region from its archaeological sites and mountain trails: it crosses a vast production area and explores the diversity of its subregions.
