Gorge trails, an underground chamber and Romanesque heritage offer different ways to experience Sainte-Engrâce. When planning, it is worth considering how much time you have: hikes range from about an hour to long excursions. La Verna combines a guided visit with different access options. You can tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most.

Choose hikes by time and distance

The hike through the Gorges d’Ehujarré starts at the church in Sainte-Engrâce. It is 12 kilometres long, takes 7 hours 30 minutes and involves 900 metres of ascent. Along the way, the route passes the Grotte de Molerse, reaches the Plateau d’Errayzé and then offers panoramic views of the Gorges d’Ehujarré. The cave, plateau and viewpoint are waypoints on the same hike.

The Tour des Gorges de Kakuetta is also a long hike, at 18 kilometres, with 7 hours of walking and 1,400 metres of ascent. Compared with the route through the Gorges d’Ehujarré, it is longer and involves more ascent; its stated walking time is also half an hour shorter. When planning, therefore, consider not only the kilometres but also the ascent and the time given.

A shorter option is the Tour du Pont d’Enfer. It starts at the Gorges de Kakuetta car park, is 2 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour. Its time commitment is therefore quite different from that of the two long hikes. The walking time is approximate.

The visitor trail in the Gorges de Kakuetta

The visitor trail through the Gorges de Kakuetta follows the river and stream. Some sections cross the gorge and river on wooden walkways; others pass over rocks and along paths. This description of the trail should be distinguished from the 18-kilometre Tour des Gorges de Kakuetta: they are separate experiences with their own details, and should not be treated as the same option when planning your visit.

La Verna: a guided underground discovery

The discovery tour of La Verna is guided and includes commentary. It passes through a 660-metre-long artificial horizontal tunnel. La Verna is an underground chamber described as the largest in the world open to all visitors. From Arrakotchepia in Sainte-Engrâce, you can reach La Verna by shuttle in 30 minutes or on foot in 2 hours. Check the access arrangements before your trip; the two times refer to these access options.

Romanesque church and the history of the mountain pass

The Église romane de Sainte-Engrâce is an 11th-century Romanesque church. Self-guided visits are available free of charge; guided visits are offered by appointment only. If you would like to include culture in your trip, this distinction is useful when planning. Near Kakuetta there is also a mountain pass between France and Spain. During the Second World War, it was used by people fleeing occupied territory.

Find hotels for your stay

Base your search for hotels in Sainte-Engrâce on what you want your stay to focus on: a long hike, the visitor trail in Kakuetta, La Verna or Romanesque heritage. The stated walking times make the difference between a tour of about an hour and hikes lasting several hours clear. The access options provided are helpful when planning a visit to La Verna. Confirm the arrangements before your trip, and note that guided church visits are available by appointment only.
