If you’d like to combine culture and cycling, Arbaila VTT offers a specific starting point in Menditte: the mountain biking route passes through the village, between the Church of the Assumption of Mary and the town hall. This gives the choice of destination a clear focus on activities, directly connected to Menditte’s village layout.

Arbaila VTT between village and countryside

Arbaila VTT is 12.5 kilometres long; the ride takes 1 hour 30 minutes, and the elevation gain is 60 metres. The route is very easy and suitable for all audiences. The distance and riding time indicate how long to allow, while the elevation gain and difficulty help you assess the physical demands.

In Menditte, the route includes a shady stretch along the banks of the Saison, from which it offers a view of the heights of Madeleine. The route therefore combines the section between the church and town hall in the village with a riverside landscape. If you’d like to combine cycling with local culture and scenery, this contrast between village and riverside is a useful distinction.

Historic buildings and traces of their past

The Church of the Assumption of Mary stands in the village of Menditte and brings together several periods of architectural history. It was built in the 17th and 18th centuries; the year 1700 is inscribed on the entrance arcade of the portico. It underwent extensive restoration in 1860. Decorative stained-glass windows were added in the late 19th or early 20th century; they are thought to be the work of Auguste Montaut, a glass artist from Oloron. The building period, restoration and windows therefore represent distinct phases.

Outside Menditte, Arbaila VTT passes the Maison noble Bidabea, which dates to 1697. Its doorway is decorated with geometric figures; a scallop shell appears on the wall, along with a motif of a climbing bear. Shortly after Bidabea, the route passes a château associated with the Bertérèche family, one of the oldest families in Soule. At Bidabea, the date and ornaments take centre stage; at the château, it is the family connection.

Another historical landmark is the Sainte-Barbe Chapel on the heights of Menditte. The year 1672 is engraved above its door. It lies almost at the same elevation as Madeleine and offers views across the Arbailles. Its elevated setting distinguishes the chapel from the riverside section of Arbaila VTT: here, the focus is on views across the Arbailles, while the route features the shady stretch along the Saison and views of the Madeleine heights.

The dates can also be compared: 1672 at the chapel, Bidabea’s date of 1697 and the 1700 inscription on the church arcade all fall within a few decades, but refer to three different buildings. The church’s extensive restoration in 1860 and the windows added only in the late 19th or early 20th century came later. Together, these form a sequence of individual inscriptions, dates and subsequent work.
