Louvie-Juzon offers several reasons to plan a stay here: the highest point in the municipality, grazing land, a moorland trail, a variety of hiking routes and a pilgrimage route. The trails differ considerably in difficulty; nature and culture each have their own highlights, too. You can choose the focus of your trip based on whether you are interested in a challenging mountain hike, a waterside landscape, distinctive habitats or sacred architectural history.

High-altitude pastures and moorland

At 2,050 m, Moulle de Jaout is the highest point in the municipality of Louvie-Juzon. It rises above extensive grazing land where sheep, cattle, horses and donkeys graze during the warmer months. Seasonal grazing is therefore as much a part of the landscape as the mountain’s altitude.

Another natural environment is the Tourbière de l’Auga near Pédestarrès. This exceptional ecosystem has distinctive flora and fauna and is classified as an Espace Naturel Sensible. Anyone interested in different habitats will find a distinct natural feature here alongside the grazing landscape: the moor and its special plant and animal life.

The Sentier de la tourbière de Pédestarrès is an engaging nature trail exploring this environment and offering a way to discover the moorland. In 2026, the trail was freely accessible year-round; self-guided visits were possible, and guided visits were offered in summer. For visits after that, it is advisable to check the seasonal schedule, especially if you are interested in a guided tour.

Hiking between mountain and river

The trails range from a mountain hike rated very difficult to an easily accessible walking route. The La montagne du Rey hike starts in Louvie-Juzon, is 8.8 km long and takes five hours; the elevation gain is 880 m. These details give you a concrete basis for factoring the time required and elevation gain into your plans.

On the return to Louvie-Juzon, the Rey hike follows a wooded path, a gravel track and then a path lined with walls leading to the town centre. The return route description makes clear both the change in trail surfaces and the arrival point. Check current trail and mountain conditions before setting out.

BR® 7 La Passerelle Bleue offers a different kind of route: this easy-access walk runs along the Gave d’Ossau between Arudy and Louvie-Juzon and crosses a wooden footbridge. Along the way, there are views of Pic du Midi d’Ossau. This gives you a choice between a long, very difficult hike with a stated duration and a walk featuring a river and a bridge, to suit different day plans.

Saint-Martin Church and the pilgrimage route

Saint-Martin Church was built in the 16th century and extended up to the end of the 19th century. Its carved capitals and keystones feature figurative depictions. The building’s history thus spans several centuries, while the figurative carvings add specific details about the church’s architecture.

The pilgrimage route also gives Louvie-Juzon a distinctive cultural connection: the village lies on the Ossau Route towards Santiago de Compostela, and pilgrims can still stop there. If you are interested in pilgrimage routes, this connection is part of the village’s travel appeal, separate from its nature and hiking options.

Cycling through the Ossau Valley

The VAE circular route through the Ossau Valley offers another perspective. It reaches Louvie-Juzon alongside a clear, shallow stream winding through a green, hilly upland landscape. This cycling route complements the themes of hiking, moorland and church architecture. The difference between activities can be clearly defined when making your choice: the Rey hike is described in detail by duration, length and elevation gain; the walk along the Gave d’Ossau and the cycling route offer different ways to experience the landscape and get around.
