Laruns offers very different kinds of discovery: protected buildings and living traditions on the one hand, and extensive meadows, forests and hiking destinations on the other. You can shape your stay around culture and local festivals, or set aside time for a longer excursion in the mountain landscape. The specific dates and requirements of the activities provide useful guidance.
Culture and history in Laruns
The Chapelle de Gabas in Laruns is listed and protected as a historic monument. Its main construction phases date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The Church of Saint-Pierre also offers a tangible point of reference for the history of the village’s architecture: it received a total of 49 figurative and decorative stained-glass windows in 1881 and 1883. Another historical connection leads to Gabas, where the commandery once served as a modest stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
The cultural calendar includes the patronal festival Heste de Nouste Dame, held every year on 15 and 16 August. It features traditional costumes, parades, dances and songs. Hèstas de Noste Dama de Laruntz, also known as Fêtes de Notre-Dame de Laruns, is listed in France’s inventory of intangible cultural heritage. The Ossau language, singing, dancing and centuries-old traditions are considered living elements of Laruns’ cultural identity.
Meadows, pastures and natural areas
The Laruns area covers 25,000 ha of meadows, forests, summer pastures, rivers, lakes and peat bogs. Its diverse flora and fauna also include some endemic species. A more clearly defined natural area is the ZNIEFF “Versant ouest du Lurien, de Soques et de Peyrelue”: it is located in Laruns, covers 3,362.66 ha and ranges in altitude from 1,040 to 2,826 m. The two area figures describe different regions and give an idea of the landscape’s range.
Several thousand hectares of summer pastures are used each year by transhumant sheep, cattle, goats and horses. This grazing maintains open landscapes that are accessible to hikers. The pastures are therefore part of the agricultural year and also shape landscapes that can be explored on foot.
Hiking trails and getting your bearings in the village
The Maison du Parc national des Pyrénées is in the heart of the village, next to the tourist office and shops. Its information area offers materials on hiking trails, mountain huts, fauna, flora and regulations. The centre also has a permanent exhibition on the natural wealth of the Ossau Valley. This makes it a good starting point if you want to combine an interest in nature with planning a hike.
The GR 10 is one of the hiking trails that reaches Laruns and includes it as a stage. One clearly described route is the challenging Tour des lacs d’Ayous: the circular hike is 14.2 km long, takes approximately five hours and links four large lakes below the Pic du Midi d’Ossau. Access depends on seasonal snow conditions, so factor these into your plans. The route has a clearly defined time commitment, while the GR 10 puts Laruns on the itinerary of a longer hiking trail.
The Train d’Artouste offers a different perspective on the high mountains. It is 20 km from Laruns and can be reached from the village. Its route runs for 10 km at an altitude of 2,000 m along a mountainside. The municipality considers the access roads to Laruns suitable for cycle tourists. This gives you different options to consider when planning: a challenging, several-hour hike, a mountain railway journey and travel on roads that also accommodate cyclists.
Festivals and local cultural events
Another annual event is the Hera deu Hromatge, held on the first Sunday in October. The competition recognizes the best cheese made by shepherds and producers from the Ossau Valley. Together with the patronal festival in August, it offers a clear seasonal reference: the two events take place in different months and each highlights a distinct cultural or regional theme.
In the centre of Laruns, the Médiathèque Municipale hosts art exhibitions and conferences, as well as nature workshops and various performances throughout the year. Since the programme may change, it is worth checking the dates in advance if you want to plan your stay around an event.
Plan your stay around what matters to you
The festivals have fixed annual dates; for the Tour des lacs d’Ayous, snow conditions are an additional seasonal consideration. If you want to include events at the Médiathèque, check its schedule too. This lets you choose how to experience Laruns based on your interests and the time available, without treating cultural visits and challenging hiking plans as equivalent.
