A painted fresco depicting the Apostles was rediscovered in the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste during restoration work from December 2007 to mid-April 2008. The church in Gurmençon dates from the 19th century. Gurmençon therefore offers a range of points of interest to help you plan your trip: church art, a contemporary pilgrimage-route theme, historic mill uses and a riverside recreation area.

Art and History in Gurmençon

La Porte d’Aspe offers a different perspective: this monumental sculpture made of Arudy marble stands at the roundabout on the Route d’Espagne in Gurmençon. The contemporary work explores the theme of the Way of St James. Compared with the Apostles fresco, the two works differ both in subject and in period: one is a contemporary sculpture with a pilgrimage-route theme, the other a depiction of the Apostles in a 19th-century church. If you are interested in the cultural references of the area, you can consider religious art and the Way of St James theme separately.

The Moulin du XVIe siècle also offers a glimpse into the area’s history. Located below the château, it was used for grinding; it also served for fulling cloth and making paper. These varied uses make the mill an interesting historic workplace: alongside grinding, its history includes textile processing and papermaking. For travellers interested in everyday life and working history, it adds a different perspective to the artistic themes.

Riverside, Transport and Farm Visit

Le Clot de l’Espérou adds a landscape feature. This recreation area lies on the banks of the Gave d’Aspe, making its riverside setting a defining part of its character. This differs from the church, art and history themes. If a waterside recreation area matters more to you than architecture and art history, Le Clot offers a different point of interest to consider when planning your trip.

The Navette périurbaine des Haut-Béarn is also relevant when planning transport. The Communauté de Communes du Haut-Béarn organises this public transport service, which serves eight municipalities bordering Oloron-Sainte-Marie, including Gurmençon. Check the current operating days and conditions before travelling. If you are considering the Navette for your trip, it is best to check these details before committing to a specific journey.

Visits to the Ferme de la Porte d’Aspe in Gurmençon are available by appointment. Arrange a time in advance if you would like to plan a farm visit. The farm offers raw-milk cow’s cheeses, including Couronne Henri IV, Petit Gurmançon and Pouquets. The selection may change. If you are visiting for a particular variety, check the current selection in advance. The visit and the cheeses mentioned offer different points of interest for travellers who would like to include a farm visit or local produce in their plans.
