Gourette lies at the heart of one of the Pyrenees’ great glacial cirques. This landscape shapes the resort, as do its offerings for skiing, hiking and mountain activities. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the different types of activities: alongside a family-oriented interpretive trail, there are high-mountain routes and seasonal winter activities.

Pyrenean Landscapes and Mountain Trails

The Gourette area has been classified for its landscapes since 1936. For those interested in landforms, the glacial cirque offers a tangible point of reference: a cirque is a bowl-shaped area formed by glaciers. The landscape classification and its location in a glacial cirque give Gourette a distinctive landscape profile.

The “Copains des Pyrénées” interpretive trail is designed to be playful and easy to access. As a family hiking trail, it combines observing the natural landscape with learning about it. This sets it apart from the route to the four mountain lakes of Louesque, Uzious, Lavedan and Anglas: it starts in Gourette, leads into the high mountains and is intended for experienced hikers. When choosing a hike, this distinction between an interpretive trail and a challenging high-mountain route is particularly important.

Climbing is also one of the possible mountain activities: the first natural climbing route on the east face of Pène Sarrière is a 40- to 45-minute walk from Gourette. This time refers to the walk to the route’s starting point; mountain conditions can affect the approach. Along the route to Lac d’Anglas, the remains of the Anglas mining facilities are also set in a mountain landscape characterized by pastures. Here, mountain scenery and industrial traces meet, though the remains should not be understood as an active visitor attraction.

Skiing, Tobogganing and an Evening Ride

The Bézou beginner area, with its green runs, is designed for first-time skiers. Another winter option is the 200-metre-long, secured toboggan run, which is separate from the ski slopes and free to access. Both options are suited to different snow activities; the toboggan run is seasonal, and its operation depends on the weather and conditions at the resort. Check whether it is open before your visit.

After the slopes close in the evening, visitors can take a one-hour ride in a converted piste groomer on the “Balade en dameuse.” The vehicle is equipped for 10 to 15 people, and the ride is accompanied by an activity leader. This seasonal winter activity adds a distinct evening option to a day of skiing. Dates and availability may change, so check what is currently on offer in advance.

Getting Here and Other Things to Discover

If you are travelling by car, the main route is via the A64 motorway, then the RN134 towards Laruns, and finally the D918 to the ski resort. Check road conditions and seasonal restrictions before setting out. This means your travel plans should take account of the specific route and time of year.

For a change of pace beyond hiking and winter sports, Gourette has the Notre Dame des Neiges cinema. It shows films on national release and also serves as a venue for conferences, performances and concerts. As the programme and opening hours may change, check the details before visiting. Alongside the trails and activities in the mountain landscape, films and events are another possible addition to your stay.
