Near Coarraze, the feeder canal of the Canal du Lagoin runs through a 200-metre-long tunnel beneath the Château de Dufaü to the Coarraze distribution point. Visitors choosing to stay in the area can focus on different aspects, from historic buildings and waterways to woodland landscapes.

Church, château and local history

The Church of Saint-Vincent-Diacre brings together several building phases: it was built in the 16th century, completed in 1534 and restored between 1866 and 1869. Its nave has six bays; two side aisles are divided by chapels, and there is also a square bell tower. Since 1988, the church has been partially protected as a historic monument.

The Château de Coarraze is a private historic monument. Henri IV spent his childhood there until the age of eight. Visitors can see the park, landscaped garden, château and a 14th-century tower. Visiting arrangements vary by season; check them before you travel.

Smaller structures also contribute to the character of the village: Coarraze has three restored historic washhouses, including the Lavoir du Bayaü and the Lavoir de la place Henri IV. Traditional crafts once included making combs and wooden kitchen utensils, as well as weaving linen and wool fabrics. These offer further ways to explore local history during a stay, alongside the major buildings.

Canal, viewpoints and woodland

From the Bayaü viewpoint, you can see Vieux Coarraze, the church, the château and the Gave bridge. The area is characterised by the canal and wooded areas. The Canal du Lagoin tunnel adds a distinctive feature of the water system to the view: it runs beneath the Château de Dufaü and leads to the Coarraze distribution point.

The artificial Lac de Sargaillouse lies in the Bois de Coarraze. The lake covers half a hectare and is situated where woodland and wetland habitats meet. It is used for family fishing and picnics, offering a different focus from the historic buildings and canal.

On foot and by bike

The Balade patrimoine Coarraze is a very easy 2.4-kilometre walk for all age groups. It starts at the town hall car park. For a longer cycling trip, the easy Circuit vélo 2 covers 27 kilometres and passes the Château de Coarraze. Circuit vélo 4 is a circular route that follows both banks of the Gave de Pau. Details about the walking and cycling routes help you factor the activity and distance into your plans.

The Baburet footbridge between Igon and Coarraze can be crossed on foot, by bike or on horseback. Easy balade in Coarraze also offers electric bike trips; the bikes can be fitted with panniers and child seats.

The journey from Coarraze station to the Château de Coarraze is listed as taking approximately 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by bike. Check the route locally if you are using these times to plan your journey.
