An old Roman road ran through Borce; it later became a viscount’s road and then a royal road. This historic route provides a cultural and historical introduction to the village. The area also features fortified sites and sacred art; Hospitalet de Borce offers a glimpse into pilgrimage history, while Parc’Ours and named hiking routes cover nature and outdoor activities.

Heritage and pilgrimage history

The fortified complex of Portalet lies partly in Borce. It includes Fort de Poutou, an access bridge and other fortifications; the entire complex was classified as a historic monument by decree on 30 November 2005. At Église Saint-Michel, two specific features point to artistic work: the stained-glass windows are attributed to the Mauméjean workshop on the basis of their signature. The north chapel also contains painted decoration created by René-Marie Castaing in 1934.

Hospitalet de Borce lies on the Way of St James. It presents the origins of the pilgrimage to Compostela, along with past and present reasons for undertaking it and the conditions of the journey. The chronological history of the former chapel is also covered. Visits are available independently or as guided tours. Check visiting arrangements in advance, as they may change.

Fort du Portalet, in the area around Borce, can also now be visited on guided tours. Tours take visitors through galleries, barracks and ramparts; the fort itself extends across neighbouring municipalities. This is a different visiting format from Hospitalet: independent visits and guided tours are available there, while Fort du Portalet can only be visited on a guided tour.

Wildlife and Pyrenean nature

Above the medieval village is Parc’Ours, a seven-hectare animal park and wildlife refuge designed to be educational and fun. Visitors can learn about animals of the Pyrenees and mountain environments, as well as local flora. Information about brown bears is provided during feeding sessions led by animal keepers. The park also has enclosures for chamois and mouflons, activities for tracking animal footprints, information panels, fun trails and picnic areas. Observation, information and hands-on activities are all available. As individual facilities may change, check the latest information about activities and amenities before your visit.

Hikes and guided activities

Two named routes can be distinguished by their described trail features. On the Tour du Lac d’Arlet, a section lies within the Pyrenees National Park, where signposts replace painted trail markers. The Tour d’Ayriré par Udapet follows a section of the GR 10 past Cabane d’Udapet and offers far-reaching views from a balcony section. When choosing between them, consider the protected-area section and signposting on the one hand, and the GR 10 route, the hut and the panorama on the other.

Based in Borce, Aspyrando offers guided hikes, snowshoeing, mountain biking and electric-assist mountain bike tours throughout the year. If you are planning an activity, confirm availability before booking.
