A stay in Bizanos can put cultural history at the heart of your trip, as well as outdoor activities. For planning, the clearly dated building and art periods, along with the different types of routes, can help: on the trails, distance, route and starting point provide specific reference points.

Church, castle history and local history

The parish church of Saint-Magne was built in 1874 to plans by Gabriel Serres, an architect from Pau. It also houses a later body of work: René-Marie Castaing painted a cycle between 1932 and 1934; his brother Joseph Castaing created the Stations of the Cross in 1946. The church building and the two works of art, created at different times, can therefore be viewed as distinct stages.

Château de Franqueville is the third castle built in Bizanos. The two previous structures were fortified castles on the same site. Its building history thus comprises two successive fortified predecessors and the third castle, built later.

Count Albert de Franqueville

On February 6, 1854, Count Albert de Franqueville moved into the Château de Bizanos. He took part in the first ascent of Néthou, known by its Spanish name, Pic d’Aneto. This episode offers a distinct historical perspective alongside the history of the castles’ construction.

Choose trails by distance and route

The Bizanos Heritage Hike (B.R.P.) is a 9.7 km loop with 20 permanently marked stations. The markers and loop format define this route option. The “D'une rive à l'autre” walking trail is laid out differently: it runs for more than 4 km between the two banks of the Gave and starts at Parking Pasteur in Bizanos.

Another route option is the 600 m voie verte between the Passerelle de Franqueville and Rue des Pyrénées. It lies within the territory of the municipalities of Bizanos and Aressy. Of the three routes, the voie verte is the shortest; the walking trail is more than 4 km long, and the B.R.P. is 9.7 km long. Their routes also differ: the voie verte connects two named points, “D'une rive à l'autre” follows the riverbanks, and the B.R.P. is a loop with marked stations. This lets you take both distance and route type into account when making your choice.

Navigation, park and water sports

The Espace Sports d'Orientation du Domaine de Franqueville has a permanent network of orienteering markers. They are installed at distinctive features of the terrain. For travelers interested in navigation in the outdoors, this offers a focus in its own right alongside trails with specified distances.

The park at Château de Franqueville covers 3.3 hectares. Exotic plants grow there, probably dating from the late 19th century. This tentative dating offers another historical reference point, while the park’s area indicates the scale of the grounds.

Parc Aquasports offers rafting, canoeing and kayaking, hydrospeed, airboat rides and stand-up paddleboarding. Tubing is available seasonally. If you are weighing up walking trails and water activities, you will find different options for your stay; the seasonal availability of tubing is worth keeping in mind when planning.
