Arcangues offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: walking routes, the Château, a hilly golf course and wetlands. When making your choice, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on. Would you like to explore the village and its surroundings on foot, learn about architectural and local history, or put landscape-related topics at the heart of your visit? The different places and themes appeal to different interests; they do not need to be combined into a fixed day-by-day itinerary.

Walking Routes and Views

Arcangues’ municipal walking routes comprise three loops for hikers. They let you explore the village and its surroundings, including Arbonne and Bassussary. This takes you beyond the village centre: the named neighbouring municipalities are also part of the area you can explore on these loops. If walks influence your choice of Arcangues as a place to stay, the three routes offer a concrete way to explore the village and its surroundings.

The Boucle Oihana offers a different perspective: the section alongside the golf course opens up views of the mountains. If mountain views are a particular interest when walking, you can use this section as a specific reference point when choosing your route.

Village History and Visible Details

In the village, the distinctive “bleu d'Arcangues” can still be seen on the half-timbered beams and shutters of the houses. The colour links two different architectural features in a recognisable detail of the village streetscape. If you are interested in architecture, you can look beyond the Château and pay attention to the village houses as well.

The present-day Château d'Arcangues was rebuilt in 1900 to the plans of its predecessor and has been listed as a historic monument since 1992. It has been open to the public since 2005; check the specific visiting arrangements in advance. The chronology distinguishes the rebuilding from its later listing and subsequent opening to the public.

The Croix de Malte stands near the chapel. It was erected in 1897 in memory of the soldiers of the 1813 Battle of the Nive and restored in 2023. The battle and the erection of the cross took place at different times: the cross is a later memorial, and its restoration marks a further date.

Golf Course and Wetlands

The Golf d'Arcangues offers a different focus. Its hilly course surrounds the village, the church and the Château. The grounds also include a 67-hectare green reserve, considered a refuge for biodiversity. At Golf d'Arcangues, therefore, sporting use and a large green space are two distinct aspects of the grounds.

One body of water offers a smaller-scale contrast: the Xurrumilatx (Chouroumillas) pond is a two-hectare wetland in north-west Arcangues. Compared with the 67-hectare green reserve, this is a single named natural area. The pond and the reserve thus offer different locations and area scales within the landscape theme.

Access to Arcangues’ protected natural areas is subject to a clear restriction: they are open to the public only twice a year, during World Wetlands Days. If you are considering a visit, check in advance whether an opening date falls during your travel period. This time restriction is an explicit part of planning.
