Vianne combines an almost intact Bastide fortification with buildings and waterways from different centuries. Ramparts, gates and towers form the most distinctive focus of its cultural heritage; the Baïse adds the perspective of the river. Those looking for accommodation for a stay centred on culture and history will find several clearly distinct themes here: the medieval Bastide, the Church of Saint-Christophe, the suspension bridge and evidence of glassmaking. You can shape your stay around the fortifications and add a bridge, lock or glassmaking history to your itinerary.

The Bastide and its fortifications

The Bastide de Vianne was founded in 1284. Its almost intact system of ramparts, gates and towers is a clear highlight of a visit. The complex includes four square gate towers and two round towers along the ramparts. When looking at the fortifications, you can focus on the contrast between the square gate towers and the round towers. Visitors can walk along the ramparts beside the Baïse, taking in the river setting as well as the architecture.

The Church of Saint-Christophe predates the Bastide: it was built in the 12th century, according to tradition by the Knights Templar. This unadorned Romanesque building was extended with an addition in the 14th century and listed as a Monument historique in 1889. Compared with the Bastide, founded in 1284, the church is the older historic site; the extension and listing mark further, much later phases of its history.

The Baïse, bridge and lock

Vianne’s suspension bridge crosses the Baïse and was built in 1844. It is one of five suspension bridges in the Lot-et-Garonne département. Its construction date complements the medieval Bastide and the older church with a 19th-century structure. If you arrange the local architectural history chronologically, you can distinguish three different milestones: the founding of the Bastide, the 12th-century church and the bridge of 1844.

The first lock in Vianne was built around 1600 on the orders of Sully. After the lock had been out of operation for more than 50 years, river tourism has gained new momentum, enabling many visitors to discover the Pays d'Albret from a different perspective. Together with the suspension bridge, built later, it offers a distinct perspective on historic waterworks and their different dates of construction.

Glass, washhouse and early graves

The Musée du verre soufflé is described as France’s first museum dedicated to mouth-blown glass. It showcases glassmaking techniques and the skill of master glassmakers, bringing a craft theme into focus alongside the buildings. Early medieval graves in the old cemetery point to a date around the 9th century. The old washhouse below the southern corner of the ramparts was built in 1762. These sites complement the focus on the Bastide with glassmaking, early graves and another historic building.
