Outdoor activities, nature and local flavours shape the tourism profile of Lot-et-Garonne. The Cluniac Way brings the connection between activity and culture to life: this cultural route runs for around 100 kilometres through 16 municipalities. Marked walking trails and cycle routes also offer other ways to explore the département at your own pace.
Walking Trails and Cycle Routes
The trail network covers 4,870 kilometres of marked paths, 450 circular walks, five long-distance GR trails and 49 Terra Aventura routes. The longer GR trails can be distinguished by their distances: the GR 654 runs for just under 150 kilometres through valleys and orchards, while the GR 652 covers just under 130 kilometres in Lot-et-Garonne. These figures give an idea of the different scales of the walking routes, but do not indicate how long they take to complete.
The cycle routes each have their own character, too. The 87-kilometre Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo route through Lot-et-Garonne includes a family-friendly greenway section. The route uses a greenway reserved for non-motorised traffic. Within the département, the Vallée du Lot à Vélo runs for 86 kilometres to Fumel. Aiguillon is listed as a starting point; if you are coming from the Canal des 2 Mers, you can start in Damazan or Villeton. The route follows quiet, low-gradient minor roads and greenway sections.
The Véloroute de la Vallée du Dropt runs for 89 kilometres through low hills and characterful villages. Depending on the season, the landscape features plum orchards, sunflowers and vineyards. Along the route, you will also come across medieval bastides, castles and former watermills. The Clairac–Aiguillon stage connects the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo with the Vallée du Lot à Vélo. Scenery and Viewpoints
Landscapes with a Périgord character define the surroundings of the Lot Valley, which also offer opportunities to visit castles and bastides. The gently rolling Coteaux de Gascogne are nicknamed the “French Tuscany”. In the Landes forest, pine-scented trails are suitable for family walks.
Two different viewpoints offer views of striking landscape features. From the Pech-de-Berre viewpoint, you can see the Lot and Garonne rivers; there is a picnic area and coach parking there. At Coteau de l’Ermitage, a viewpoint overlooking Agen is located on the GR 652.
Bastides, Castles and Museums
Monflanquin, Pujols and Villeréal are among the three Plus Beaux Villages de France in the département. The historic heritage also includes 42 bastides and 95 castles listed as historic monuments. The Château-musée Henri IV in Nérac was built in the 15th century by Alain d’Albret. From 1577 to 1582, it was the main residence of the future Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois.
Museums and mills also bring different dimensions to the cultural offering. Lot-et-Garonne has 37 museums: six Musées de France are open year-round, while 31 community or privately run museums open in summer. Of the 535 mills in total, 22 are open to the public through Adam 47. A painting of Christ on the Cross, attributed to Rembrandt, is permanently displayed in the church in Mas-d’Agenais.
Regional Specialities
The geographical area for Pruneaux d’Agen covers all of Lot-et-Garonne except the canton of Houeilles. Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne are two spirits with AOC designation.
