To the south, Trentels borders the Lot for about seven kilometres. The commune comprises a plain and rolling hills; at the same time, the buildings in Lustrac and the churches of Trentels and Ladignac offer a distinctive way to explore the area’s history. This gives you two different focuses to choose from when planning your trip: landscape and heritage.

Landscape between the Lot and the hills

The La balade du coteau de Trentels route takes you past bastides, dovecotes, orchards and wooded hillsides. Its highlights range from historic architectural forms to orchards and wooded heights. This means the focus is not only on individual buildings, but also on the landscape where these features come together. If you are interested in exploring the area, the route offers a specific starting point.

The information about the landscape gives Trentels a distinct character: the Lot as its southern boundary, along with a plain and rolling hills. The route adds bastides, dovecotes and orchards to this picture. It offers a focus on the landscape that considers nature and the built cultural landscape together, without reducing them to a single feature.

Lustrac: defence, mill and protection

Château de Lustrac was built to defend the mill and a ford. Its layout forms a quadrilateral defensive system, with a square tower at each corner. Its purpose and design go hand in hand: the clearly structured layout makes its defensive function easy to understand.

The protected status of the château is also clearly defined: its façades and roofs have been partially listed as a Monument historique since 1 February 1988. The partial protection of Moulin de Lustrac also covers its façades and roofs, as well as the millrace with its sluice and the weir up to the river’s centre line. The two listings therefore concern different buildings and specify the scope of protection for each.

The Lustrac site also extends into the commune of Trémons on the Lot’s left bank and was protected on 14 May 1982. This date applies to the site; the listings for the château and mill date from 1 February 1988. Visitors interested in the heritage can thus distinguish between protection of the site and the specifically named parts of the buildings.

Churches with distinct traces of time

At the medieval Église paroissiale Saint-Christophe, the crossing of the former transept and the bell tower structure above it have been preserved. The surviving section can be dated to the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries based on its sculptural decoration. By contrast, the focus at Église paroissiale Saint-Jean in Ladignac is on the masonry: most of the Romanesque masonry has survived and probably dates from the 12th century.

The two churches therefore offer different points of reference for understanding their history. At Saint-Christophe, the preserved architectural form and the dating based on its sculptural decoration take centre stage; at Saint-Jean, it is the extent and probable date of the Romanesque masonry. Comparing the two brings the different historical layers of the local heritage to life.
