A 13th-century Romanesque church, a memorial site dedicated to the history of the Resistance, and a lake with interpretive panels and a birdwatching hide give Tourliac a variety of points of interest. When choosing accommodation and planning your stay, it helps to consider cultural history, walks and nature watching separately: visiting arrangements are not the same everywhere.

Church architecture and the history of remembrance

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Tourliac was built in the 13th century. It is predominantly Romanesque, but also has Gothic elements, so it cannot be reduced to a single style. Those interested in church architecture can consider its Romanesque character and Gothic features as two aspects of its design. The building offers a different historical perspective from the memorial site at Bouscatel: here, the focus is on the architectural classification of a church, while there it is on a specific event and its commemoration.

Traces of the Nazi attack of 14 July 1944, in which eleven Maquisards lost their lives, can still be seen at the Ferme du Bouscatel. The Maison de la Résistance – Ferme du Bouscatel is a memorial and interpretation site, and a testament to the significant events of the Resistance in the Villeréalais region at that time. Here, you encounter two aspects: the attack itself, with its date and number of victims, and the significance of the Resistance in the region. The Nathan Gostein stele stands at the entrance to the Bouscatel memorial trail. Guided tours of the Maison de la Résistance are available by prior appointment only. Allow time to arrange a visit and confirm the visiting arrangements before your trip.

Walks and nature at Lac du Brayssou

Lac du Brayssou is located in the communes of Tourliac and Parranquet and is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Walks by the lake are possible all year round. Interpretive panels along the access paths around the lake inform walkers about the species found there. There is also a discovery trail around the lake with a birdwatching hide established by the hunters’ federation. As well as a walk, there are two specific points of interest for nature lovers: the explanatory panels along the path and the birdwatching hide.

Mallards, teal, great crested grebes, gadwalls and grey herons can be observed over the course of the year; seasonal sightings vary. Year-round access to the walking route does not mean that every species can be seen at all times. The lake is therefore a different focus for observing wildlife and plants than a visit arranged for a specific time. Fishing is also possible at Lac du Brayssou: night-time carp fishing and fishing for pike, roach and zander are mentioned. Before fishing, check the applicable regulations and permitted periods.

Highlights for your stay

It helps to prioritise during your stay: the church and the Maison will appeal to travellers interested in architecture and the history of the Resistance; at the lake, the focus is on walks, wildlife watching and—subject to the rules—fishing. Different timing considerations apply: a guided tour requires an advance appointment, fishing is subject to permitted periods, while walks are possible all year round. Choosing between these priorities lets you plan your days around what you would like to explore, rather than treating all activities as the same kind of visit.
